I was wondering if anyone went for the Denon deal where you get the DVD-2500BTCI Blu-Ray player for free if you buy one of their high-end receivers? Amazon has this offer until April 29.
I was thinking of getting the Denon AVR-2809CI receiver for $1194 and getting the 2500 for free. However, honestly, the 2809 is more than I need. I live in an apartment with a large ~500 sq. ft. living room and am at least two years away from buying my own place. And I only have (at the moment) two old PSB floor-standing speakers and an old Infinity subwoofer. My TV is a Pioneer Kuro 50" plasma. I could make do with buying the Denon AVR-1909 receiver for $649 plus a Playstation 3 (or BDP-S550) for $399.99 for a total of $1049. I don't think I would play many games. I am pretty set with buying a Denon AVR-xxxx receiver (not their AVR-xxx line). And I would prefer to stick with Amazon. Any opinions? Also, can the Denon 2500 be plugged in directly to my Kuro (via HDMI)? I've read the 2500 is a "transport," so I'm not sure what that means. |

I would skip the receiver + transport Amazon offer. One year ago, it would have been a tempting deal since it was the only pure transport on the market. Today, not so much. Pretty much all the current profile 2.0 players can bitstream the codecs now at a far cheaper price. There is a reason why they are giving them away for free.
![]() Without being long winded, the BDP-S550 can do everything the Denon transport can do and more, at a much cheaper price. Apart from the fact that it can bitstream the lossless codecs, it can internally decode them as well. It's faster, it's profile 2.0, so you can update directly from the net via the ethernet jack. Trust me, it's not fun updating a dated player like the 2500. Start up time is also slow as molasses with the 2500. I mean slow. I'm not saying this just to have a contrary viewpoint, I actually had the Denon transport, so I can give a fair summary of its performance. It served me well, and did what it was supposed to do, but the newer players from Sony and Panasonic perform better, don't use up as much energy, are smaller (WAF issues, I don't care) are easier to update and are cheaper. Stick with the Sony BDP-S550, or if you can wait, maybe the upcoming Oppo player. |
