Default BR/HD-DVD Hybrid drive

This is a hybrid drive reviewed on CNET.com. They say it looks promising.

We're happy to report that unlike LG's standalone BH100 hybrid player, the hybrid drive comes bearing the official HD DVD logo. That must mean that LG leapt the hurdle preventing the drive itself from supporting the HDi interactive menu standard native to all HD DVD discs.
Wow, these people are sure obtuse.

HD DVD-ROM logo. Bare drive.

HDi support is in the players (hardware or software), not the drives.

Gary

EDIT: Whatever happened to the promised Vista support for HDi and HD DVD?

30GB encodes on 50GB Blu-ray Discs are bad, wasteful - yes? We want all movies making the most of Blu-ray's superior capacity and A/V bandwidth for tricky scenes.

So what's so promising about a hybrid drive?

That it plays both formats.

I'm a BR fan, but I'm not such a fanboy that I don't welcome the opportunity to play back another format.

There is a certain camp that is obsessed with SONY ONLY or HD-DVD ONLY on everything -- a view which I see as counter-productive to the lowering of cost of players and media. Dig deeper, and you usually find that people harboring those views are working for/with Sony or HD-DVD specifically.

I could care less about ending the format war. I would like to see inexpensive and reliable dual-format solutions on the market.

That is why this is a valid article of interest.
