Like I said, I can't see it beforehand because his face is just too blurry at the start of that shot (and that's from looking at the 1080p trailer).

It seems PJ is trying to make this bigger than the real final chapter of the middle-earth legend, what's he thinking?

60 years after the events of the Hobbit during the War of the Ring Sauron attempted to get a foothold in the North so that he could send his army of Orcs and Easterlings to Lothlorien and Rivendell. Dwarf-King Dain Ironfoot and King Brand of Dale managed to stop the Easterlings and Orcs from taking Erebor and Dale. It was the defining battle of Sauron's Northern Campaign during the War of the Ring and its a battle that Jackson doesn't have the rights too, and couldn't show during his LOTR films.

Now, King Dain Ironfoot will be introduced in The Battle of the Five Armies movie and Sauron's army is going to be attacking Dale in the movie as well as Erebor. I think what Jackson has tried to do is turn his Battle of the Five Armies battle into as important of a battle as the future Battle of Dale is in the books. Essentially Jackson is making Sauron's Northern campaign happen 60 years before it happens in the books.

Instead of a random goblin army trying to take Erebor from Thorin it is now Sauron trying take Erebor so he can set up a Northern front and from there strike out at Lothlorien and Rivendell and begin a new campaign against Middle-Earth. That's why Jackson is calling it the Defining chapter. Because in his movie-verse if Sauron wins at the Battle of the Five Armies and takes Dale and Erebor the North will fall and Sauron will move against Lothlorien and Rivendell. And if they fall...

I'm just curious, why would Jackson not have the rights to show it on film? It's clearly mentioned in the Appendices of the book ROTK if I remember correctly, and Legolas sort of mentions it at one point in the movie, so I don't see why he wouldn't have had rights to it.

Has anyone actually seen these trailers run on TV yet? With roughly 4 weeks left until the release of the movie I haven't seen any advertising.

Yeah youre right that was a brainfart on my part. Jackson has the rights and could have shown it in LOTR, but it would have been a massive detour and hard to establish Erebor and Dale in ROTK. And doing a time jump of 60 years at the end of BTFA doesnt seem likely so I figure he is molding that battle's stakes into this battle's stakes to make BTFA more important.

I would do the marathon viewing in theaters if it wasn't in 3D. I can barely deal with two hours of 3D, let alone 9-10 hours.

Well I was proven wrong. I think I said in this thread that they wouldn't have the marathon in my theater and sure enough, checking today...they do! And it's in the GTX screen!

Im going to pass on the Marathon screening. Thats just WAY too much for me lol. However when the Extended Edition comes out I'll be doing a MASSIVE MARATHON in my own theater. Best part of my theater is I can drink all I want and dont have to drive home and there is no dress code!!!

I don't understand why but AMC is terrible about releasing ALL of their showtimes even for big movies like this. The last two years I've had to buy the tickets to the Dolby Atmos ETX screening like 3 days beforehand because their website doesn't update with all the screening times until a few days before.
