Default Buying a BD player.

Im new here so please excuse my ignorance of the HD/BD war.

My question is does anyone think that there will be an absolute winner? Or does it seem like we are going to have to take a side? I have been reading this forum for 2 days and I know most everyone here is pro-BD. Also, I do know that there is an LG HD/BD combo player. Most have said it's not very good.

I guess why I am asking is because Sony has put so much into the BD. On the other hand MS is a corporate giant too and they have invested largely in HD. To be honest I could care less either way. I just want a solid player that will play a good abundance of movies. ie: If I get a BD player does the future show it will have more movies? I am a Netflix guy so all I am going to do is mark the spot for either HD or BD. If it's BD then they will send me movies for my BD player. If they dont have my selection in BD then they send me the regular DVD.

Also, does the BD player do an upconversion like some of the new HD players?

Thank you in advance,

BTW, Please dont hate me. I love my Wii.

Welcome to the forum,

Yes all BLU-RAY players have standard DVD up conversion. BLU-RAY technically has better picture quality with higher bit rate titles and larger capacity compared to the HD-DVD format. 50GB BLU-Ray discs compared to 30GB HD-DVD discs. When it comes to BLU-RAY players there are several brands to choose from, Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic, and Philips. When looking at HD-DVD players you have only one choice Toshiba.
Now when it comes to movies Warner and Paramount Pictures are format neutral, which means movies are released in both formats. Now when it comes to exclusive studio releases from Disney, 20th Century Fox, and Sony Pictures are only available in the HDTV BLU-RAY format. Universal Studios is the only exclusive studio that the HD-DVD camp has.
So yes the BLU-RAY format is the better format to choose. Currently know one makes a working combo player. The LG combo is not a true HD-DVD player since it does not play the interactive menus. The only reason to own a combo player would be if Universal Studios remains exclusive to the HD-DVD format.
Basically either BLU-RAY will win this format war or both formats will coexist. BLU-RAY camp has a very strong consumer electronics support and very large studio support compared to the HD-DVD camp.

The future will eather be Bluray Or a dual formate player. HDDVD as is, will not win , they can only hope for in dual formate players, but there all way over priced.

The problem with hddvd is disc capacity, yes it is better then SDdvd but not as good as bluray.

Yes there will be more & more movies released. What is holding up things is the security (anti-piracy software), the movie studies need to understand there is a limit of what can be done & someone with the time and resources will get around any anti-piracy software on matter how 'secure' it is.
The best thing, I think, they could do is make a 200gig disc & max it out. 150gig movie would take days to down load. Also limit the size of blank BD (none commercial) so a HD movie could not fit on to one, that is just me.

That is outstanding! I could not have asked for a better reply. I knew BD had more studios. But I did not know that Toshiba was the only HD-DVD player out there. Plus, 360's HD-DVD player. But you have to own a 360. This is great and makes perfect sense now. When you stated "Warner and Paramount Pictures are format neutral, which means movies are released in both formats." Did you mean that they do both HD and BD or did you mean both BD and regular DVD formats?

Thanks again,

That's another point I did not think about. How are the load times? I guess for movies it has never been too much of an issue. But in reference to the PS3. I own a Wii myself. Dont have issue with load times. But I did try a 360 in store and the load times are terrible.

Thanks again,
Your correct when it comes to videogame systems the XBOX 360 has a HD-DVD add on device. One of the best quality BLU-RAY players to own is the Playstation 3. It sales for $599 and is both an excellent BLU-RAY movie player and BLU-RAY game machine.
