Doesn't surprise me: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=691

But I think it's done very well, considering the part 1 syndrome, the weather, the lack of IMAX etc. (IMAX itself doesn't contribute that much to the overall takings but it kinda gives a film that sort of 'event movie' kudos in the long run.)

Ah, you're an apologist for President Snow, huh?

This was surprisingly enjoyable and not dreadful like some have been making it out to be. I'm looking forward to Part 2.

[Show spoiler]It's more than that, I mean Snow wiped out her entire District, he's just as deserving of an arrow through the head. Even though Katniss herself voted for the last symbolic Hunger Games she puts two and two together and realises what a foul creature Coin is; I think she'd have killed her even if Prim was still alive for the sheer calculated barbarity of dropping those parachutes.

Katniss
[Show spoiler]was against the idea of another Hunger Games. She voted yes so that she could get a weapon in her hand and assassinate Coin. The book includes a passage where she looks at Haymitch during the vote, and he understand exactly why Katniss voted yes.

Also think about the massive cold streak on the east coast. So stop blaming stuff being in two parts. Plus the year as a whole has been down really.

[Show spoiler]But I don't get that, because Snow is going to be executed regardless and Coin even says she's saved him for Katniss. How does voting yes or no for the final games affect that outcome? I suppose Katniss may simply be wanting to keep Coin sweet, but she'd have been given the chance to kill Snow (and by extension Coin) in any case.

Katniss had her own devious plan in mind.

Katniss is quite a schemer, as seen throughout the events of the books and the movies, probably why she survived when so many in District 12 did not.

Plus she's a hunter and thinks about stuff. So that gives her the advantage of always thinking about things and what to do if it don't go her way the first time.

biggest complaint ive heard is people are really hating the fact that this is split into 2 they don't really feel like they got to see a movie with this part1 but rather a snippet and they hate that

that's kind of turned me off from watching this in theatres, i never liked the idea of splitting films in two and this one sounds like it failed at providing an actual full movie experience with the split (unlike say LOTR films which did them well) + the trailer showing katniss shooting down a jet with an arrow is kind of..."ugh" I never read the books mind you so i dont know if she does that in them too

Katniss does indeed shoot down hoverjets in the book. However, the book is a very sharp critique of the wastefulness of war, even if your cause is "just". There are numerous unexpected or unintended consequences (including that scene that you referenced), which makes the book kind of a downer.

I didn't like the book at first, but looking back, it has grown on me. It is much more mature in terms of ideas than you would expect of something targeted at teen readers.

She does, it's a more fleshed out event in the books though, where they shoot at multiple hovercrafts and don't hit them all. They also use the incendaries to little effect.

She also uses special explosive arrows. So it's not just not like she's using regular arrows.

I want to see this, but I'll just wait and see it at home when pt. 2 comes out. I'm not about to pay theater prices to watch a movie and not see the ending.

Not based on a book but Kill Bill is another example of splitting one movie into 2. Only difference was that both volumes/parts were pleasingly satisfying to audiences. Each were fun, had a lot of substance (on each Volume) and were fast paced.

I'm sure there are tons of people who enjoyed this. So not like everyone hated it.

Thing is, this is the future of mainstream cinema for the foreseeable future.

I remember when the general rule of thumb was that sequels cost 20% more than the previous movie but grossed 20% less at the box office. Now there are franchises where the sequels sometimes make as much as 50% more globally than the previous entries.

Indeed, just look at this movie. Despite its States-side decline, Mockingjay rose as high as 19% over Catching Fire in places like Russia (the irony!).

We will be seeing "incomplete" movies for a long time.
