I had no idea they did that, very strange. I guess it's useful for those people who can't understand a word of English and wouldn't want two sets of titles cluttering the screen. Must be seamless branching, as you say. Not at all what I expected, I just though they'd be player-generated in every language, even English. |

I mean, when you pick English for hearing impaired, french or Spanish, the burned in text disappears? Can you please check? because if it is like this, then there's no point for me in purchasing the US disc since I will always watch the film with subtitles. |

Those burned in subtitles are my only criticism of this film. And I only criticize them for being a big block of text that does not stand out well from the background, and usually doesn't stay on screen long enough to work your way through reading it all. But that's only a minor blip in an otherwise perfect masterpiece and important film.

I checked the US BD.
The burned in titles remain on screen when you turn on the subtitles, which are player-generated. There are 5 sets of subtitles, English SDH, French, Spanish, French and Spanish. No idea why there are two sets of French and Spanish, the menu only lists 3 options (each language once), but when you cycle through the actual subtitles while the film is playing using the 'Subtitle" button on your machine, there are 5. But the original titles remain burned in for all options. I tried turning on subtitles both with the subtitle button and from the BD's main menu. Ah, OK. Thank you very much for checking! Then I'll believe it's the US release I will be getting. If only there was a Bluray only version. I don't want releases with extra stuff (DVD) that I won't be using at all. |

I just hope there aren't many descriptive subtitles, because i get irritated by those.

Note: I am very new to Blu-ray; in fact, I am assembling a list of BDs to buy and then I will look at BD players, and I have newbie question: when I see a film described as having "1 BD", can I take it for granted that it is a one-sided disc (in the sense that the entire Blu-ray film is on one side of the disc, whatever the other side may have)? Or do I have to somehow determine, in each case, if I will have to flip the disc over? (One of the criteria for replacing a DVD to Blu-ray is, in fact, that I will be able to watch it all in one sitting, without flipping the disc over or putting a second disc into the player, so this is critical in deciding what films to get on Blu-ray.) |

And you probably won't have to deal with a movie split in to separate discs either, unless you're a LOTR fan ... |

Yep, I've never heard of an alternate version of "Schindler's List" in Germany. I saw it on German TV when I was there and I don't remember any changes, except dubbing of course. IMDB only lists an alternate version in Israel, with the song at the end switched for another one.

Ah, I only ever saw it in American theaters and on German TV, never when it aired on American network TV. I know it was altered for that NBC airing, I think I read they also altered the scene where Ben Kingsley walks in on Liam Neeson having sex with a girl for American network TV. However I don't think that version was ever released on home video, so it's not really an official alternate cut, just a censored TV version.

You can present genocide on TV, but as for body parts...FEAR THE BOOBIES!
How did they get around the nude workers forced to jog in front of officers? The scene where they are culling the old and weak like butchers at a cattle auction? Were they allowed to show that because there was no sex involved? |
