After watching the 2nd trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road...I'm just wondering if the EFNY remake will ever gain traction in Hollywood?
Obviously it won't ever match up to the original, but I'd sure like to get the chance to be the judge of that! I don't Fury Road can unseat the original Mad Max, but damn if those trailers don't look pretty amazing.
I recall that Gerard Butler was tapped to play Snake...oh man, that would be a treat. I'm sure Kurt Russell would be game to do a small cameo. I hope a copy of this release lands in the right hands, and the ball gets rolling again.

Is the new Max officially a reboot yet, or a vague sequel? Last I heard there was no official word either way.

I can't stand Butler, and it made me so happy to hear Kurt Russell voice his disappointment when they first made that announcement. Thankfully, Butler is no longer attached.

I'm not sure. I just assumed since he had the
[Show spoiler]V8 Intercepter again and didn't appear to have the leg brace
that it was a reboot.
Either way I'm very happy with it, and would love to see the same with EFNY.

I guess if you don't like GB, it would be a tough sell. I like him though.
I also seem to recall Jeremy Renner was attached. I didn't know Kurt Russell was against it? Was he against the film, or Butler?

Yeah agree, it's pretty gonzo. No doubt Russell's popularity at the time was a big reason why it was made. Carpenter's stock had plummeted after Big Trouble In Little China and fell further after Memoirs Of An Invisible Man, so he was clearly not the key factor.

Re: The Evil Dead 2 comparison. I also made the Evil Dead 2 comparison on here a while ago. I've thought that since the late 90's actually, and the film is best enjoyed on that level.

re: Ghosts Of Mars' 'throwback' nature, yes and no. That's an excuse often used to defend it, but the film's narrative structure is really nothing like the genre films of the 70's and 80's. If anything it's an updated version of an old school film, but it really falls between two stools, and that's part of why it's not successful. It doesn't really offer the straight forward thrills of the old films because it's too caught up in dull plot mechanics(i.e flashbacks etc), which were poorly handled.

Re: Vampires. I like it for the same reasons stated here(e.g James Woods, the general atmosphere etc). It's also the film where Carpenter continued experimenting more with angles and montage, which started with In The Mouth Of Madness.

I also find it interesting how whenever In The Mouth Of Madness is talked about by Carpenter fans, what's rarely ever mentioned is how much of a departure it is from the way he normally makes films. Along with Big Trouble In Little China, it's easily his most playful film.

Reasons why I believe an EFNY remake won't work:

The film would never be shot in New York for budgetary and other reasons. You can't set a film in NY and shoot it in Canada, Bulgaria or wherever, convincingly. It's NEVER worked IMO. Which leads to the next problem: You can't call a film "Escape From New York" today and take it seriously. Even in 1981 it was ridiculous. I guess you have to be a New Yorker to know that NOTHING would stop someone from leaving the city if they really wanted to, no matter how many blockades you put up.

Casting. No producer in the world would cast someone older than 21 in the film. In other words, they would essentially be ruining the film by turning it into just another teen angst film. One thing that worked marvelously about the '81 film was the cast. All were seasoned vets and all did a great job in their roles, especially Ernest Borgnine. I don't think there was anyone younger than 30 in that film and it was still great. I understand the concept of casting hot young things for a film to succeed but what about the core audience, fans of the original? Do you really want to alienate them just to make another forgettable remake?

Production values. Most movies shot today basically all look the same: slick, glossy and very high-tech. That's not necessarily a bad thing but it does get boring after the 250th time. There was a scene early on in TRANSCENDENCE that showed a run-down L.A. because of a lack of electric power and the absence of technology - that was the best sequence of the entire film. I wish the whole film would've been like that. Something like that would work for an EFNY remake IMO.

Rant over

He doesn't like revisiting the past and 'looking backwards', which he says is why he turned down that Expendables role, and allegedly ixnayed Stallone spitballing a Tango and Cash sequel.

In the extras on Arrow's Big Trouble in Little China disc, he explains his feelings about this sort of thing and Snake.

Best Freudian slip ever?
Definitely in the running, pun intended!

Thank you for the info! I'm going to have to revisit that release.
I get what he's saying, and can understand...but as a fan I can only say: C'MON MAN!!!
Maybe if something were to gain legit traction, he might ease, or change, his stance? Here's to hoping!
In the meanwhile, with this Russell taking that stance, I guess it's safe to assume he won't be involved in any extras for this release.

You do know that John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK was filmed primarily in St. Louis, MO, right? Seems not to have damaged the film's reputation...

(* not that I'm supporting a remake of EFNY at all)

Same here, he's on my list with Sam Worthington and Jai Courtney for d bag action stars I can't stand. Now if they were to make a EFNY remake with say Ray Stevenson or Jeffery Dean Morgan maybe I'd be on board.

Agreed. I wanted so bad to like this movie and even rewatched it a couple of times hoping it would grow on me like some movies do, but no.

He seemed more against Butler than the remake itself. When he was asked about it, he replied, "I will say that when I was told who was going to play Snake Plissken, my initial reaction was 'Oh, man!' [Russell winces]. I do think that character was quintessentially one thing. And that is, American."

I do recall reading that, on IMDB I think, a while back. Well kind of a moot point now. Although I would like to see a remake done for two reasons:
1) Just to see what they can come up with. I'll always have the original so I don't mind seeing a modern take on a then-futuristic film.
2) To bring attention to the original! Maybe we could get a sweet digibook or steelbook out of the new attention!

Despite bad direction in several parts and absolutely bad acting, Vampires is funny. Entertaining. Not a good movie, but fun.

I like it enough that I'd like to own it. But for me, it's in the bottom half of the Carpenter films I enjoy enough to own (which is about 3/4 of them).

In my bottom 10 theatrical films that I have seen from start to finish
