I've just heard of this 1966 film today!
Call me very interested in a Criterion Bluray of it!

Was just taking a look through the New Year picture and comparing it to HD transfers Criterion has put on iTunes* (and trying to match the unknowns up). Could the soldiers be representing Breaker Morant?

Also, A Master Builder arrived in HD on iTunes within the past month or so - not that the clue for that one was unclear!

*See the Criterion PDF in my signature and look for green coloured titles (those not released on DVD are listed on the last page).

I meant for me personally. Because honestly when I first started buying stuff from them I did think they had a certain "caliber" or whatever, like most of us did/do. As for your second sentence, yes that's spot on with what I said in my post!

I gave up on the drawings too, or rather never began. I actually quite like wiating for the announcements and being caught off guard. Hopefully they surprise us with something we are overlooknig in this years

Now that you mention it, the hats of the 3 soldiers resemble much to Breaker Morant.'But was there in the film a soldier with a tall hat like the one in front in the drawing? I don't remember but I don't think so.

It has to be Breaker Morant, although it has already been released on Blu-ray...hmm...

Could the girl with all the weapons be a clue for "Dressed to Kill"? I saw that mentioned on another Criterion forum, and it does seem to make sense. It kind of looks like she's naked with just straps for weapons wrapped all around here. Another similar answer given in reply to that was "Femme Fatale", which is a possibility too.

I recently purchased the existing Blu-ray of Dressed to Kill during the FoxConnect 50% off sale, but have not had a chance to watch it yet.

So, in other words, the drawing is definitely a hint for Dressed to Kill.

Yes, but I believe that that Blu-ray has been OOP for some time now. Criterion released the film on laserdisc, but lost the rights to it before they could release it on DVD. It's not a stretch to believe that they might've gotten the rights back.

They've had it on their Hulu channel for ages now, so I'd imagine thats a definite yes to them having the rights to it.

Its part of the Westchester deal. If Shout doesn't issue it, then it should be available. That said, the officer with the unfixed bayonet/short sword/dagger is defininitely not from Breaker. I spent 40 bucks on the Aussie release and its absolutely in my all time top 10, so I would love it to be a CC HD release, but not going there on basis of that drawing.

Ah, I didn't even know it was OOP.

I know that Criterion also released / will release The Fisher King (TBA) and Time Bandits (December 2014), which were originally released by Image. I wonder if Criterion will re-release The Long Good Friday and Withnail and I.

Faraon film by Kawalerowicz - New Trailer - YouTube
I'm a broken record on this, but the 21 films that are part of Martin Scorsese's Masterpieces of Polish Cinema (including Faroan) very much need to be released in HD. I'm fairly confident it will be Criterion. One of my biggest disappointments with the New Year's cartoon was no hint at any of those titles (along with those of a WCF2).

Default 4th Annual Criterion Collection Poll - Best of 2014 (Results)

Ladies and gentlemen, the polls are closed and the votes are in...

This was the first time I conducted the poll strictly via PM. 24 voted and I think most of the regulars are represented. Thank you to all who voted this year!

The 4th Annual Criterion Collection Poll - Best of 2014

Best Cover Art (Voters Picked 1)

17 covers received votes (many of them single votes). These two releases took first place with 3 votes each:

First Place (Tie-3 votes each)

Best Box Set (Voters Picked 1)

It was an incredible year for box sets. I believe The Complete Jacques Tati and The Essential Jacques Demy sets to be among the finest releases to date in Criterion's blu-ray era. Not surprisingly, they received the most votes.

First Place (9 votes)

Second Place (6 votes)

Favorite Blind Purchase (Voters Picked 1)

More than any poll question I think these results reflect the two most-buzzed about blind purchases of the year.

First Place (6 Votes)

Second Place (4 Votes)

The Lena Dunham Award - What were they thinking by releasing______? (Voters Picked 1)

I was surprised by the amount of films (15) receiving votes in this category! Here is the entire list:

Tootsie 3
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World 3
King of the Hill 3

All Receiving Mention
Time Bandits, Insomnia, The Big Chill, F For Fake, The Complete Jacques Tati, Y Tu Mama Tambien, A Hard Day's Night, Blue is the Warmest Color, Hearts and Minds, MacBeth, 400 Blows (Dual Pack Re-Issue) and Breathless (Dual Pack Re-Issue).

Best New Spine (Voters Picked 3)

Best New Spine and Best Release of the Year were the toughest calls to make (Even when picking 3 films!). I think the fact this year saw two major, long awaited releases that just so happen to be cinematic landmarks made the voting especially fierce. Films like A Hard Day's Night, Tess, My Darling Clementine, Red River, etc - probably would've received more votes in any other year.

First Place (10 Votes)

Second Place (6 Votes)

Third Place (5 Votes)

Notables: Red River (4), It Happened One Night (4), The Great Beauty (4), Breaking the Waves (4).

Best Upgrade (Existing Spine DVD to Blu-ray, Voters Picked 3)

20 different films received votes. It was an excellent year for upgrades to some of Criterion's most popular art house films like Rififi, Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood and Picnic at Hanging Rock. In the end it came down to a long-awaited upgrade, an excellent 2K scan and a dazzling digital 4K restoration.

First Place (Tied-9 votes each)

Second Place (8 Votes)

Best Release of the Year (Voters Picked 3)

I allowed voters to select 3 films but many of us would still find it difficult to narrow it down to a top 5. 34 releases received votes! Owners of the first place entry in this list saw what I think (Along with Last Year at Marienbad) is the greatest representation of classic black & white cinema on the blu-ray format. Pristine!

First Place (10 Votes)

Second Place (5 Votes)

Third Place (Tied - 4 Votes Each)

Thanks for the poll this year. I actually agree with the results but think persona being on top of 3 categories is crazy seeing that there were like 4 categories listed that it could be in.

[QUOTE=ShellOilJunior;10236825][FONT="Book Antiqua"]Ladies and gentlemen, the polls are closed and the votes are in...

I just want to take a moment to say Thank You! for taking the time and initiative to conduct the poll. I had a great deal of fun thinking about my answers, and have been looking forward to reading the results.

Especially pleasing is the fact that I happened to win reasonably priced copies of Il Sorpasso (one of the picks for Best Blind Buy) and Riot in Cell Block 11 on eBay yesterday!

Know that your efforts are much appreciated. Great job!

I am 99.9% certain that the rose clue is simply for The Rose (1979).

Vilmos Zsigmond has been at the Criterion studios lately and although we are all hoping for McCabe and Mrs. Miller, this can be no coincidence.

Note: John Bailey in the second photo (perhaps one of his works will be released soon? Mishima? Swimming to Cambodia?)

Also, Cabel Deschanel was recently at the studios to record an interview, so perhaps one of his works will be released, as well. Perhaps The Natural or a re-release of Being There?

The biggest surprise in the results was the lack of votes for the Demy and Tati sets.

For best release I chose: The Complete Jacques Tati, La Dolce Vita and Persona.

I really really wanted to include L'avventura but I couldn't remove any of my 3 selection. Not having the Tati set on the list is unfathomable. Demy got the squeeze. Maybe next year I should make it pick 5

Man, I totally forgot to vote in the poll...I'm bummed.

I would have given another vote to the Tati box set for best box set of the year....and add another vote to Il Sorpasso being the best blind buy (for me too)...and add another vote to Picnic at Hanging Rock for my personal choice for best release of the year.
