I really dont know whats the deal about many Australian movies getting no release in Germany, no matter how damn good they are.
EG, The Proposition, The Reef
Then again, as the French title went "Mister Babadook", it possibly would end up "Herr Pappatock" or sth.

In all honesty, I'm not so sure that I'll be purchasing The Babadook on Blu-ray, despite my favorable review of the movie earlier in this thread.

It's an impressive movie, but it's also one of those movies that I don't see myself revisiting time and time again.

(I'll probably change my mind back and forth about 10 times before the date of the release, though.)

It'll likely be cheaper when it matters.

I've watched my aussie copy three times. It would probably only be twice...but it was the title that finally forced me to change out my 15 amp wiring to 20 amp wiring and circuit. First time we watched it....the scene
[Show spoiler]with mom confronting babadook
(lots of bass) kicked our circuits off a couple of times.

So after the wiring I watched it all the way through to appreciate the impact of the film up to the scene mentioned above. Then I convinced my wife to watch it.

I know I have another viewing coming up for my son and couple of his friends from video production class.

You're goin to show them that (linked above) short as well?

Course not as impressive as the feature, but could be interesting for a vid production class, I figure.
J. Kent kindly featured a mobile version @vimeo, BTW,

The LFE is great in this! I only rented it on Amazon, but when the Blu-ray arrives, I'm sure that's gonna sound even better.
Very effective at intensifying the creepiness in several scenes.

Yes, my wife dislikes horror movies...with some exceptions....like Halloween, since she grew up with that film. The last horror movie she sat through was Insidious, which she still blames me for her nightmares from that one.

All that being said, all the positive reviews, plus the top ten lists etc...she agreed to watch it. I think she really appreciated the level of acting and story line being more of a psychological thriller, than a flat out horror movie. I think every mom feels like the mother in the film at some point when dealing with a fussy child...so it was common theme that most mothers can relate to...and making that the basis of a horror movie, driven to madness because of those feelings (taken to the extreme) was interesting to her.

My son's classmates (all Soph in high school) I think will appreciate not just the film, but we'll watch the extra's where they talk about production design and creating a "feel" for the film

I hadn't thought about the short, but that would be a great idea. Watch the film, then view the short. I think they'll have an appreciation for story idea's and an evolution of a small idea into a feature film. The seedling into a tree if you will.

Great idea...thanks!

His teacher wants to start a monthly film appreciation club. I would be happy to provide our home theater for the club to use. I think they would have a blast.

Yeah I think this short was made on considerably low budget, but it features some "tricks" which worked pretty good I thought. But I've totally no experience in filmmaking myself, at all btw

As for your wife's nightmares, well she might just need just more training
but seriously, it can be quite a nasty thing, I had repeatedly nightmares when I was about 8, after watching Wolfen or The Fog, like for years. (recorded them with timer function, then watched with my pal, from behind the sofa, mostly)
I guess thats why a Rating system does make sense.
Now, the women I'm currently with is like 100% no-way when it comes to horror, no matter what, so you might consider yourself lucky

Yeah totally unsure about the re-watch factor on this one, either.
Strange, sometimes you know at once you'll watch it never again although it was good, -
or definitely a few times more (like The Descent or Emily Rose I knew that)

This is the original short film that inspired The Babadook, it's entitled 'Monster' and it's from the same director.

Don't watch unless you've already seen The Babadook though, or if you don't care about being spoiled a little.
