I read on another forum that Fox can't just crossover their Marvel franchises as they would please, but based on the trailer, this looks like it's straight out of the Days of Future Past playbook. And businesswise, it would make sense to have a big "FF vs. X" event movie down the line. Do you guys think we'll get a few nods to the mutants in general or the X-Men in particular in this movie?

I've always had a problem with the FF's super-powers, certainly with regards to seeing them in live-action. It may be kind-of absurd that I can buy Spider-Man's powers and not these but we all have a credibility line that's difficult to cross. I guess it's because they're such physical transformations - Torch basically catches fire, the Thing triples in size and his body becomes segmented rock - I always thought that's got to hurt.
But most ridiculous is Reed Richards stretching powers. Not only does it look like it would be incredibly painful and debilitating to your health, it also looks really goofy, as the first FF films proved. When there was talk of people like Clooney or Brosnan starring as Mr Fantastic, I just knew they'd never sign up for something so ludicrous. Batman was bad enough for Clooney: Imagine being in an FF film that tanked and having to live the rest of your life with stills of your head on a twenty-foot long neck all over the internet. ![]() So I'm pretty intrigued by Trank's allusions to Cronenberg. I totally get what that could be. If they really go into depth on the transformations and their effects, that could be great. Put it this way: There was pretty much no heartening news coming out of the FF camp before today and now there are several positives, as well as a clear rebuttal of the idea that the whole thing would look like CHRONICLE 2. My prediction is that this will feel very similar to the first X-MEN movie. It'll feel a bit slight and unsatisfying, given that it's going to be so taken up with re-telling their origin story. Doom will get short-changed. But it will nonetheless be a huge improvement on the previous films; a sleek, solid intro with some great moments that may bear real fruit in a sequel, should it be made. It'd be a shame if people clinging to their understandable apprehensions messed up the chance for that to happen. You can't tell much from the trailer but I'm already pretty sure that we could have done a lot worse. |

A question for anyone. Putting aside the fact that this is an adaptation of prior material - if we pretend for a moment there is no source material, and that this is an original property - how do you feel about the teaser as a film?
Forget that I'm a giant Fantastic Four fan. The teaser didn't do much for me. Does it look bad? No, I was expecting worse. It doesn't look "worst movie ever" to me. But judging the teaser on its own, it didn't grab me. It didn't excite me. The Force Awakens showed even less, and that excited me. There was nothing in this teaser that said, "I have to see this movie." If a full length trailer comes and turns my opinion around and gets me on board, great. I want to like this movie. It's always nice having one more movie to look forward to. I love the Fantastic Four and want a great Fantastic Four movie. I'd never not see a movie over a teaser, but we often see, or don't see, movies based on their trailers. Some trailers sell you, some don't. It doesn't even mean the movie is bad... just that the trailer on its own did not sell you. The Edge of Tomorrow trailer didn't get me in the theater; after I rented the movie, I loved it and bought the Blu-ray. Judging it as a movie and not as a comic adaptation, it's currently not a "must see" at the theater. I'm open to that being changed if I start being impressed by what I see. That will determine whether I see this at the movies or as a rental from Redbox. My opinion would be the same right now even if this film were an original property instead of any kind of adaptation. |

I absolutely loved Chronicle. I thought they took three average high school kids, gave them super-powers and turned one of them into a super-villain and they did it all in ah hour-and-a-half or so and in a completely believable way. And I liked the way it looked too. I wasn't totally in love with the found footage aspects but overall I liked the look. OTOH, I absolutely hated the dark, murky battlefield of X3 and wasn't a lot crazier about the dark, murky battlefield of Days of Future Past. Bottom line though? I definitely want to see it. |

![]() This isn't what I want, so I'm not supporting it. Simple as that. The more they make of these types of films, the more I'm becoming more critical of them, but the biggest saving grace will always be that they represent what these characters mean to me. If they miss that mark and then don't give me anything in addition to make me feel excited about the film, then they've pretty much lost me. As I've said many times, I could end up liking this film, but for the most part, this is not going to be the Fantastic Four movie I wanted, so I'm not paying for it. They had a chance to win me over with this trailer, and it did nothing for me other than to confirm what I already knew -- this is not for me. And regardless of my standing on it as a fan, I seriously don't think this trailer makes the film look all that great anyway. If it had come out about ten years ago, maybe, but otherwise, this looks like generic SyFy level production. |
