I was in Books-A-Million yesterday and noticed a CC titled The Samurai Trilogy. Was going to pick it up but idk anything about the series, also it was a little steep in price.

re: Shallow Grave came in the mail yesterday. It's dark, humorous and has a certain charm to it. Recommended, if anyone is into that sort of drama. Cronos should be in this afternoon. Clean, Shaven is another good one, if anyone is interested.

Looking forward to many more years and thousands of thousands of posts with all of you here! Now, back to our regularly scheduled, on-topic, posts....

Congratulations, my friend! Since your posts are always interesting and informative, I think your achievement is significant.

Awesome btw, especially the 2nd one I thought)

found this at cinemastore.us

Btw the guy who designed these did the Criterion artworks for:

Antichrist, The Thin Red Line, Walkabout, Dillinger is Dead, The Double Life of Veronique, The Man Who Fell to Earth, La Haine, In The Realm of the Sense, Mishima.

He is extremely talented and actually had kids things to say about my work (which was a huge shock!), sent him my design sI posted here to see what he thinks, especially as he designed the stunning original artwork for Under The Skin.

I just finished watching my Criterion Blu-ray of Preston Sturges's The Palm Beach Story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced movie, with all of its screwball turns, because of the great performances by the gorgeous Claudette Colbert (Sleep, My Love, It Happened One Night, Drums Along the Mohawk), Joel McCrea (Sullivan's Travels, Foreign Correspondent, Ramrod), Mary Astor (The Maltese Falcon), and Rudy Vallée (Batman TV series). At first glance, it's easy to dismiss The Palm Beach Story as a "fluff" Criterion title, along the lines of I Married a Witch, but there's a interesting undercurrent of cynicism in this movie about modern marriages based on looks or money.

The Palm Beach Story is not quite in the same league as The Lady Eve, Sullivan's Travels, or Unfaithfully Yours, but there's never a dull moment, and it's easy to see how Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot might have picked up some cues from the plot.

I particularly like the line, "That's one of the tragedies of this life - that the men who are most in need of a beating up are always enormous."

The ending of The Palm Beach Story is quite divisive, but I think that it's great.

Polaroid do you do any photography work, or are you strictly graphic design? I assume by your name you're a dual threat lol.

I've studied photogrpaphy and done quite a bit but not really done much in the last few years say - I need to get a new camera and do some more lol

I did go travelling round America which gave me some great opportunities, sadly I didn't know of Criterion back then! lol

I love the 'Howard the Duck' one. Can someone mock up one for Weird Al's 'UHF'?

I don't know if this a bit grim or weird but what are the best films in collection that revolve around suicide or the degradation of the human spirit?

If its a spoiler just put in spoiler tags but I'm ok to be spoilt.

I can only think of Breaking the Waves in terms of the destruction of the soul. But off the top of my head I can't think of many that focus on suicide or true misery.

I know its a weird thing to request, I just find the subject fascinating and very close to heart.

I probs have a few that will be suggested I just cant think right now, am knackered lol.

Downloading Nancy is a heartbreaking film with an incredible score and the cast, especially Maria Bella are perfection - would be nice to get this on bluray. I never hear people talk about this gem and its devastating.

I haven't seen it, but I'm sure that Taste of Cherry would fit.

"Downloading Nancy" is the movie that popped up first in my mind when I read the first part of your post, I saw it many moons ago and it has never left me, Maria Bello`s best performance I think, such a powerful film.

Nice to see someone else appreciate this film - she was phenomenal, not sure why it doesn't get more attention tbh

All of the "shock" is severely overhyped.

It probably makes a difference seeing it in a packed theater and particularly back in 1975 before the more graphic gore-fests and torture films and other violent sh*t have come out and desensitized newer generations who will watch it having seen it ranked #1 on "most disturbing films" lists on the internet. As one of those latter people, I would agree it's not as shocking as you're lead to believe, at least if you go in knowing full well the sadistic acts that are committed on screen (and let's be honest, most people who watch it these days likely do). I never closed my eyes during the film, and afterward I didn't lose sleep over what I saw. That said, there's no denying the film's ability to disturb, unsettle, and gross you out. The climax is still pretty effective in its realism and brutality.
