Oh ok. Polk and klipsch make good 5.1 sets. I have a set of HTD speakers. I really really like them. Def tech makes good speakers. What is your budget? A good set of 5.1 will start around 1500.00. if your budget does not allow this then their are some members here that can link you with a good deal online.

Depending on what you paid for the receiver and what kind of setup you want to run! Let's suppose, for sake of argument, you want to run a 5.1 system. In that case I would allocate 3-5 times the amount of money you paid for your receiver to get maximum benefit. Sure, you could spend more...because IMHO, the speakers are the single most important asset of your system. But if you spend $500 on a receiver and attach $5,000 worth of speakers you have an imbalance. The receiver couldn't deliver what the speakers are capable of receving.
Here's a simple equation: $500 receiver...at least $1,500..max $2,500. And your system will kick ass! If that is not in your budget right now start with a pair of floorstanding speakers, so at least you can listen to 2ch PCM...sound is pretty good. Then add your Center Channel Speaker later on, then your back surrounds and last your Sub. I give you that opinion only because that's how I did it and I was (and still am) very pleased with the end result. Good luck...auditioning speakers is a fun ride! |

So - OK. I've also been eyeing the 705 for a while. I have no speakers, and basically do not need them to 'kick ass'.
But, c'mon... I'd like to have that surround sound feel. I'd like to have better sound beyond the in-tv speakers of my xbr4. So figuring an Onkyo 705, and a speaker budget of 250-600 - are there any garden variety HT 5.1 in a box sets you can recommend? Thanks once again Doc |

If you want a quick fix ...go ahead and suggest that the OP buy something to satisfy his needs for quick gratification. In the end however, his patience will be greatly rewarded with nights of pure pleasure and a smile he has never brought upon his face! There are however places where you can satisfy that 5.1 surround experience (however limited) for a few dollars. Just be careful of that volume control on your new receiver. |

Heres what I bought:
$260 - Polk Monitor 50 (L, R) $100 - Polk CS1 (Center) $120 - Polk Monitor 30 (Rears) $110 - Polk PSW10 (Sub) The total came to $590. I bought everything from Amazon. Don't forget to add speaker wire, HDMI, a sub cable, tie downs, power strip, etc. My cabling alone was another $100 even from monoprice. I just set this up using an Onkyo 605 for my receiver. I am very satisfied with the outcome. I agree with some of the other posters about budget being about 3x what you paid for the receiver. Now that you got the Onkyo 705 (which is a great piece of technology btw) and your money is limited. You could get the Klipsch quintet 2 Series. With the KSW 10. they go for around $500...
When I tried them at our hi-fi studio at work and switched between regular sound and HD-Sound you did hear a real difference.. |

BTW: Do you already have a Blu Ray Player? I forgot to ask that earlier. If not there are 2 you can get: Panasonic DMP-30 or the Samsung BDP-1500.. Both will bitstream HD audio to your 705.. Which you will be able to hear when you get speakers...

Emotiva has their ERC's on sale right now for $229/piece. If you were to save your pennies and dimes for awhile that would be a very responsible way to spend your money to start.

I picked out Subwoofer.
Here is the link Can someone tell me if it's good? It has good reviews. Question time 1. I might just go with 5.1 for now. What happens with 7.1 movies on a 5.1 system? 2. Can I mix speakers/woofers/ recievers. like can I have a Onkyo Receiver with a yahmaha bass and Sony speakers? |

However, many people will suggest getting the same kind of speakers (from a series) because of the "timber matching". In other words, they will usually all have the same kind of tweeters, mid-bass, frames etc. causing them to have the same "sound acoustics"; which can make sounds moving from left-center-right sound more seamless. My speakers are mixed (two monitors with a 12" woofer in each and a large center channel - not from the same company - and it still sounds great). Unfortunately, there is no "right" answer. The main thing is this: research, purchase, review - if you don't like something, don't settle - return it. It's your money, get whatever sounds good to you. ![]() Good luck. |
