Bonus Whisper of the Heart Manga to go in my massive Manga collection. It's an awesome read.

Cheers chums.
But you're not done! There's still one film in their catalog. :/

Yeah, I missed the news too. I'm bummed out, now. Yonebayashi was definitely a great asset for them. A true artist, for sure.

No there isn't. A TV movie doesn't count in my opinion.

Well, you may be done, but the rest of us aren't. It's still a movie, and a favorite of mine as well. Bring it now, Studio Ghibli!

Go read your Manga...

According to the listing, it only has Japanese subtitles. When I get the chance again, I'll check the package/disc itself, and let you know if it turns out otherwise. Though the dialogue is pretty minimal from what I recall, and it should be enjoyable and mostly understandable without understanding the dialogue.

I just decided to get the JP version for now, since it seemed that the French version is likely region locked. (And I guess it helps that I can read and speak Japanese.) Though I fully intend to get this Limited Edition boxset sometime soon. I've held off long enough--too long probably, considering it's limited. Luckily it hasn't gone out of print yet.

Seems like a frustrating experience tracking it all this time. Hope it is all in one piece...

Japanese article on Yonebayashi at the "When Marnie Was There" release event

He says he doesn't work at Ghibli anymore.

Watched Marnie last night.
Loved it. The animation is so beautiful. Would love to visit those places.
The story was very poignant and subtly effective.
Remarkable tale of catharsis and forgiveness.
When the credits rolled and that soft, beautifully written song played along with some final scenes, I thought it was perfect. Absolutely perfect way to complete their swan song.

We'll definitely find out tonight - it's now out for delivery - Yay! I actually hope the delay was due to transport issues, and not that my package was severely damaged and had to get pulled aside to be resealed/repackaged...

Sounds good - can't wait to see it. I had read last week about Yonebayashi leaving Ghibli at the end of last year, really made me sad to hear that - hopefully it's not the last nail in the coffin for Studio Ghibli...

Got it today. It came packed in a big cardboard box and in it the film was on a piece of cardboard with plastic around keeping it in place. Pristine condition! Well done, Amazon!

Sure man. I'll do that and you go watch your Mardock Scrambled.

@Ray: Glad you enjoyed it buddy, that's 2 awesome animated films in a row now. I'm sure you'll agree that everyone in here owes it to themselves to go and watch Song of the Sea, which is perhaps better than many of the Ghibli films.

I saw that one the other day, and it surprised the hell out of me. I asn't a big fan of The Secret of Kells, but this one really was great and touching, and it had some great animation in places as well. Very well worth a watch!

The song is my favourite song from a Ghibli movie (although I haven't still seen the film).
Next in line is the one from Poppy Hill.

Totally agree Sin.
Song of the Sea could easily fit in with the Ghibli family of films.
Between Kaguya, Song, & Marnie, this is a remarkable time for hand-drawn animation. Feel blessed to be able to own these titles and watch them at will.

Haha... what? Pretending a thing doesn't exist doesn't make it any less real.

Ocean Waves certainly exists, but doesn't count as a theatrical film (which is what Sinthetic was most likely referring to originally).

It's like saying Beyond Witch Mountain or The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes aren't Disney films because they were originally created for television, or that Tha Sweet Blood of Jesus isn't a Spike Lee film because he premiered it on Vimeo first, or that Scorsese and Fincher's work on Boardwalk Empire "doesn't count" because it doesn't fit some preconceived notion of what a film is.

What I said was "there's one film left in their catalog." He said "no there isn't." Which is false. Nobody's Japanese Ghibli Blu-ray collection will be complete until that film is released.

Agreed, totally loved it. it was a big relief for me that it was a massive improvement on Arrietty.

Glad to hear you guys are enjoying this.

There is one particular scene that has stuck with me ever since I saw it last year in Japan.
[Show spoiler]The flash back to the funeral of Anna's parents and she is isolated and clutching her doll in despair.
So delicate and heartbreaking.

I'm a bit sad that Yonebayashi left Ghibli. I felt he had so much potential to carry Ghibli onwards. I would have liked to see him grow a little bit more under the Ghbili banner, but none the less, I'm sure he will do well even outside of Ghibli.

I think the whole yonebayashi quitting is a bit of a red herring. I know terms and words have been translated into "quit" but the real truth of the matter is he's not working at studio Ghibli anymore and the fact is no one really is, so simply he's left. He's also stated he wants to work with ghibli in the future, so the message im taking from it is that when ghibli make films again in the future he will be there and I'm ignoring that it's been reported as an I QUIT angle/story to do just that... Make a story out of it.
