Default Independence Day Audio - PS3

Hi,

I am not able to hear any audio from my Independence Day Blu-Ray disc when I play it on a PS3. I am using an HDMI cable to connect to my HDTV and an optical cable to connect to my surround sound system. I am fairly sure I have all the audio options correctly set on both my PS3 and surround sound system because I have no problems with sound on my other Blu-Ray discs.

So far the only way I can hear the sound on the Independence Day Blu-Ray is if I change my audio options on the PS3 to HDMI and hear it coming from the surround sound system via the TV. I am sure I must loose some sound quality this way.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or knows of a solution of how to get sound from Independence Day via an optical cable connected to a surround sound system please?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Make sure you have the audio set to optical on your PS3 and the correct setting on the receiver. Also, make sure you have the PS3 set to bitstream. You might also want to make sure you have all the options in the optical output selected.

R U sure? I thought it was to be set to the other option(PCM?)

I have my PS3 going thru the receiver (HDMI) and then to the TV. That movie sounds awesome.

If you're using HDMI, you select Linear PCM, so the PS3 decodes the audio.
If you're using optical, you select bitstream, so the receiver decodes the audio.

Does that clear things up?

I thought the PS3 could not bitstream. Does not mater to me. I use HDMI for my set up. Guess I learn something new everyday.

It just can't bitstream the advanced audio codecs like DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD.

Playstation 3 can bitstream output the following formats through the optical output:
Dolby Digital 5.1
DTS 5.1
AAC
LPCM 2.0 44.1kHz
LPCM 2.0 88.2kHz
LPCM 2.0 176 176.4kHz
LPCM 2.0 48kHz

You have to go into the audio setup options, choose the optical output for audio and then check the audio formats you wish to enable for optical output. DD 5.1, DTS 5.1, LPCM 44.1kHz and LPCM 48kHz works for most viewers.

The chipset relating to the PS3 HDMI output is limited in the formats it can output. It can bitstream output the older surround formats. However, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD formats have to be internally decoded and output as multichannel LPCM instead. Very little if any audio quality at all is lost over this issue.
