So I'm curious. Do you guys think this is going to be as vapid and soulless as the Abrams Star Trek films?
No. Then again, I didn't think JJ's Star Trek films were "vapid and soulless".

LucasFilm wanted him to release the UOT because of fan demand for it. He only "sort of" caved. He agreed for it to happen, but the discs are considered as "bonus discs" and are non-anamorphic old masters. This was basically done specifically to make these versions seem even more dated. There was no solid reason for them to be presented that way. This is Star Wars we are talking about... George Lucas still didn't want people to watch them the way they originally came out.

Now that Disney owns the rights to Star Wars, it'll be interesting to see if the original trilogy is released in the best quality as they were originally presented on screen in theaters for the first time.

On topic, a good villain helps make a great movie, so I'm hoping the Sith cause a lot of problems for the heroes in Star Wars VII.

And I'm hoping that this might be some indication of that:

Same here, but I'm still not sure if Kylo Ren will be able to take the place of Vader or Palpatine. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It's really his to screw up. He's got a rich universe to play in, one of the greatest screenwriters alive, the original cast, and a studio willing to pay top dollar for the best crew and resources available.

But I'm not really impressed with Abrams. I've said in the past that JJ Abrams seems like a hack because he directs mainly sequels and remakes. He's a reliable craftsman but he's not really very creative. Recent comments I read in an article about how Abrams shoots a ton of footage and then leaves it to his editors to decide how to cut it left me respecting Abrams a lot less and his talented crew a lot more.

I enjoy Abrams' movies for the most part, but something about them doesn't resonate. I like his Trek's and own them, but they are like a good cheeseburger. Quickly forgotten. I actually prefer the PT over those. I am sure these new movies will be better written and acted, but I am going to miss Lucas' Ford, Kurosawa, and Lean inspired shot composition. Can't have it both ways I guess.

Abrams Star Trek films only exist so Voyager won't be the worst Trek.

I hope we get Fringe, Alias seasons 1 and 2 JJ Abrams and not everything else JJ for Star Wars The Force Awakens.

End of 2019? Unless the date got moved up, the distribution argeement expires in May 2020.

Yeah, he definitely made it clear that he had no interest in the UOT-- the reason those DVD's came out the way they did is that he would not put any budget into remastering those versions-- pretty much all they could do was take the best existing versions (the Definitive Edition laserdiscs) and port them over to the DVD.

But I'd still say the act of doing so went against his earlier quote-- The UOT, in whatever quality, was now available to be preserved and viewed in the mainstream DVD format. No longer would it be relegated to and old laserdisc format few people had or deteriorating VHS tapes.

I think Lucas' attitude towards the UOT at this point is he has/had no interest in funding the preservation of those, but if Disney wants to do it, it's no skin off his back.

Yeah, I really don't think he cares that much about star wars or whatever is done with it at this point. I think he pretty much just wanted to wash his hands of the whole thing back in 2012, which of course he did.

Judging from his work that really doesn't surprise me. The burger was a good analogy. He's the director equivalent of Mcdonalds , pretty tasty but cheap and useless in the long run. Star Wars is a much lighter franchise and doesn't seek to do as much as Star Trek on the intellectual side so maybe Abrams will be a better fit here.

I really see these films being like the prequels. They'll be best remembered by kids and adults will like them well enough until they think back on the empty plots.

I liked star trek into darkness, then I watched it again. Damn.
