USA The Cell (2000) - July 7, 2015

The Cell Blu-ray

Quote:
JENNIFER LOPEZ (Monster in Law) takes a terrifying journey into the mind of a killer in this chilling, critically acclaimed psychological thriller.

When a serial killer, VINCENT D’ONOFRIO (TV’s Law & Order: CI, Men in Black), falls into a coma before his last victim can be found, a child therapist (Lopez) must use an experimental treatment to enter his mind and learn his secrets before it is too late. The visually haunting world threatens her very existence when she becomes trapped by the terror inside

Now, an FBI agent, VINCE VAUGHN (Wedding Crashers), must rescue her from the killer’s nightmare mind before he too is lost to the twisted world forever.

Just had a WTF moment. I googled "film cell blu" to find other releases that came with film cels (like Interstellar). I clearly searched wrong , and got lots of results for The Cell. Literally five seconds later I check my inbox to see Warner announced The Cell. Freaky!

Yep, Canada. Warner totally doesn't acknowledge them

I really like this movie, and i think it's a bit underrated. Interesting premise, and some great, if not disturbing, visuals.

I got the Canadian one cheap, it's not really anything to write home about, the picture quality is not that much better than DVD, and it's missing all the features from the US DVD. If this one is an improvement I'll probably get it.

The US R rated cut ran 107min, so if the press sheet is to be believed, it will be the extended cut.

I've come close to getting the Canadian version many times. I'm happy to see this getting a US release although I'm not expecting much out of the release (guessing it'll be barebones with middle of the road transfer). I'll pick this up though. Pretty trippy movie and one of the handful of movies I liked Jennifer Lopez in.

It's jarringly cut, though. In the UK we've only ever had the uncut version, so when I first imported the R1 DVD it was disposed of pretty quickly.

I never had any idea and I've watched the DVD/Blu-ray a bunch of times, but yeah, you foreigners understandably would want to avoid this Now, I bet the next time I watch it I'll notice that it seems censored and be annoyed.

I checked out my Japanese DVD of the uncut version and the difference in running time makes up almost 2 minutes that was cut. That much I did remember, but wanted to confirm. That one scene making up about 20-30 seconds, another one about 25 seconds and individual cuts that last from frames to seconds, mostly in regards to every time one of the female bodies are shown. For instance, in the cut version, it will only show a side view or head shot, but full frontal in the longer cut.

I would prefer the uncut version, but I know it will not get a BD release, at least in the US. I will hang on to the DVD I have of it.

Can you find any source backing up any of this? I can't find any evidence of anything other than the first scene being censored in the US, but I can't find anything about the Japanese version so maybe it is more explicit than the "uncut" European version that everyone talks about.

Every scene regarding this corpse leading up to that moment has been altered or cut and it does not play out all at once.

If you go to this link below it does actually give an idea of the differences.
whether one sees it as important is up to the individual, but it is almost two minutes of footage.

http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=3627754

14 changes parts, including
* 5x alternative footage
* 1x longer shot in the Theatrical Version
* 2 recuts

Difference: 115,3 sec (= 1:55 min)

Here is the Japanese DVD that I have had for well over a decade.
It was considered the best DVD release in the world of this film.
A two disc special edition, uncut, high bitrate picture and full bitrate DTS.

Default GREAT review

Preordered this the moment it was listed on Amazon and I'm happy to see that the film got the treatment it deserved. May not be the best film ever but the visual aspect of it coupled with Shore's insane score (which I also finally got the CD of fairly recently) make it a worthy Blu Ray viewing.
