Default How Good is Metal Gear Online?

Hello,

I've been trying to sift through all the information on MGS4, but most everything I read focuses on the single-player part of the game which I hear is amazing. However, I don't buy many games and the ones I like most are usually online multiplayer. This brings me to my question, exactly how good/fun/long lasting is the metal gear online part of this game? Is the community large? Is the set up good, not much lag, etc?

I would like to get this game, but don't really want to drop $60 just for a single player game. Sounds lame, but I need good multiplayer to plunk down the big cash for.

Thanks in advance.

Some people really enjoy it, but I found it to be too boring. Though I enjoyed Single-Player very much and thats worth it alone.

I'm just waiting to replay it when Trophy Support comes out for the game.

boring, eh? so compared to games like COD4, halo, gears of war, etc., it wouldn't be very interesting?

I'm just using those games as reference since they have been my favorite online multiplayer games in the past. I HATE that gow is 360 exclusive, but i'm not about to buy a sh*tbox just to play it.

mgo is a very different type of online shooter.

you can't really "run and gun" on it, its more stealthy and tactical. it is not as fast pace as a cod, halo, or gow, however it is fun in its own unique way and is a nice change once in a while.

if you try to play this like a cod, halo, gow you will rip your hair out and think its the worst game ever, if you play it like mgo it can be very rewarding at many times.

MGS4 single player is amazing and is worth 60 itself. If you can get it for 40 like that guy said, it is definitiely worth that. MGO is horrible though in my opinion. Its slow, inaccurate (that one is probably me), and it just isnt fun imo. play COD4, RFOM, or warhawk online.

In my oppinion MGO is the best online game out there. It does have some lag issues, but that doesnt ruin the game experience for me.

It has multiple mode's, the standard Team Deathmatch, Capture mission etc, but it also has unique mode's like Sneaking (with Solid Snake) and Team Sneaking, where 1 team has stealth camouflage and non-lethal weapons.

People are saying it is slow pased, but I dont agree with this. Mode's like TDM, CAP, SNE and Base are certainly not slowpased. RES and TSNE however are slowpased and stealth is key.

People dont like MGO because you have to push 2 buttons to fire instead of just 1 in games like COD4 and Socom.

I am a MGS fan and was a big fan of MGS3 Online for the PS2, but even I had to get used to MGO after playing COD4. It seems slowpased at first, because of the characters runnings speed, but that quickly changed on me.

At the end, even if you dont like MGO, MGS4 is well worth the 60 dollars.

First off, like someone else said, the single player is worth full price alone IMO.

MGO is fun too but is very different in pace than COD4. It is a lot more tactical but if you are any good at playing single player (and not just running and gunning) you will do fine. I jumped right into MGO and was scoring in the top 50% without any "practice" at it and I'm not a excellent player in general. I didn't have any problems with accuracy as another person mentioned. Also, IMO, MGO is also a LOT more stable connection-wise compared to COD4. With COD4 every other game is ending with the host quitting or w/e. That problem is resolved with MGO b/c the game will automatically switch to another host if the original one drops.

The biggest gripe I have with MGO has been hinted at by stockstar1138:

Exactly. It is a different type of shooter but in most of the games I've played everyone else was playing it in a "run and gun" style. The different match types help break some of that up, but IMHO, MGO's biggest flaw is gamers playing it as if it were COD4.

As others have said, the single player experience is worth the price of admission.

I haven't even tried online yet-- I tried the stupid Konami sign up thing and had so much hassle with that (never getting the confirmation emails, etc) I gave up. Just didn't care enough. Single player was why I bought it anyway. Why the heck couldn't Konami have just used the darn PSN IDs?

MGO is a good online game... not totally my style but I do like it, personally tho I can see why it was included with the game, I would've probably felt like I wasted money if I bought it seperate, haha

i love it . play almost everday, but like people have said, its not for everyone. if you enjoy metal gear you will probably enjoy this. dont play like COD4 or the run and gun style, you will suck and its the most annoying thing when people do that. sure you will get some kills but you will quickly realize its not the best strategy. stealth is key, play it like metal gear and it will be a great experience.

the konami id is pretty dumb but its a one time thing. just have it auto login and you wont ever have to worry about it again.

the character speed and the controls take a little time to get use to but if you play the story mode you will be conditioned for it before you even start playing online. even if you dont play the entire story mode getting some time in on that is important.

also there is a lobby for beginners, its a great place to start to get use to the game, but i will say you will find "noobs" in there who try to run and gun. the main lobby may be a better choice but they are getting closer to having much less beginners in them. there is a training mode, which would be your best bet to getting the hang of the game.

overall, i love it

oh, i forgot to add this: the online community is great, a lot of nice and friendly people. you will run into the eventual jerk but most people get sick of them and vote kick them, or you can simply leave the room and join another. there are constantly new rooms opening with a great variety of games. lag is an issue at times but people are quick at picking up on it and either tell the person to leave and fix their connection or simply kick them.

i highly recommend buying it. if you are unsure in any way just rent the damn thing, sure you will have to go through the hassle of the konami id but it will save you a hell of a lot of money if you do not like it

I loved Resistance, Warhawk, COD4 and Battlefield, but I really didn't like MGO. It seemed to me like the hit detection was off, like I would shoot at the head and not get a headshot, and then I would just random shoot at the guy and get a headshot. Weird. The muzzle flash and recoil were a little much, and the rolling around everytime you saw someone was annoying.

I found it worse than GTA IV online play.

And I completely hate the GTA IV online playability.

LOL there is so much variety in the comments here. Some people hate it, some people love it, not much in between. I guess the best thing to do would be like one poster suggested and rent it first.

I just started to play online multi player games, and I must say I enjoy it. I hate the run and gun type play from Resistance. First time out in MGO I had 3 kills to 1 death, compared to Resistance I don't even have 3 kills yet.

I have MGS4 since lunch but I've never tried the online part yet... I'm not into online game much... I suppose, if I tried a bit more I would like it but I've only tried resistance and motorstorm... and even if I'm good on single player campain I really sucked online...

I think it really ultimately is probably a love it or hate it thing. Either you like to COD4 and RFOM and like to run and gun or you like being tactical, sneaking around and whatnot. FWIW I like both for different reasons.

Yeah, if you are unsure then rental is probably the best way to start. Though, you REALLY should play the single player first. First of all, MGS4 is just awesome. Secondly, it will give you the training you need to be good at MGO (controls, etc).
