Alright, so I have decided that I am just going to save up more and not get a HTIB. However, I do have another question. Is it true that the PS3 isn't good in the audio department because of the fact that it decodes and outputs in PCM multichannel only? And because of it, should I also save up and get a different Blu-Ray player as welll for the best results?

Sorry for all of the question, just new to all of this.

The ps3 does bitstream most lossy formats i.e dolby digital5.1 ect. It does decode hd lossless audio to pcm but it should sound the same scientifically speaking although some claim that the receiver doing it sounds better.

That's alright. Ask away. The PS3 is great audio wise, except for the lack of bitstreaming HD audio codecs and 7.1 analog outs. That really means nothing to you, unless you're dead set on having the "DTS HD-MA" or "Dolby TrueHD" light up on your receiver, or you just have to have a player that works with your older model receiver. I think you would need a better receiver, better speakers, and a high end Blu-ray player to notice the difference from players with better internal DAC's.

Although I'm not a PS3 fan, the answer to that question is false. Even though the PS3 decodes and outputs PCM you're still good.

why would you let these guys talk you out of that system. It looks like its the 606 with 7.1 onkyo speakers. I know they aren't the ideal speakers but if you have a ps3 you can get hd audio with this system and upgrade your speakers later when you have more cash.

We're here for the best interest of people in Home Theater distress. He asked us for our opinion. We told him that it's better done right the first time. For roughly the same cost as the HTIB, he gets a similar receiver that processes all current codecs (except for other theater formats such as SDDS) and at the same time providing superior speakers. I don't see the problem in that, do you?

Not that I don't mind doing comparisons for the cheaper better deal, I would like to see the break down of the recommended components price wise.

Hello Everyone,

My friend told me this was a great place for learning and trying to figure out what works best for my surround sound problem. I currently dont have any surround sound at my place and really would like to upgrade to some. I have PS3 and a 42inch LCD with 1080p. The room can't be much larger than maybe a 14' by 14'.

Now I was looking at the HTIB HTS6100 as well because it can decode the HD and what not, like the Onkyo 605. The only thing I am concerned about is between the Polk and the Onkyo speakers is, which are better? The $850+ route I would rather not spend right now, as I dont need a "glorious" sound system, just something that sounds very good for the price. If I cant afford the extra Polk speakers, meaning the Polk 50's and the Center CS1, should I just stick with the 6100 HTIB? And is the Polk 5.1 sub any good compared to the 6100's sub? To me it looks like the Onkyo 6100 has better speakers and sub in the package.

Are the Polk 5.1 and 605 combined better than the 6100 system? This is my main concern because either I am going to get the 6100 all together or the 605 and Polk 5.1. I am looking to spend around $600 roughly. Thanks for the help!

I have the same question. I live in a small apt and don't want to scare the neighbors. at the same time, need a good system where in I can extend it after moving to a bigger house. looking for just 5.1 now due to space constraints. How does the polk 5.1 and 605/606 fare in compared to S6100. someone please help.

glad to see you joining the site. your friend was right, as this is a prime place to get some great sound/cost saving advice. and take my advice with a grain of salt as it is just my personal opinion.
if you absolutely MUST have the system right now, and dont want to dump the extra $200 or so, then yes, buy the onkyo 6100. i work retail and have that setup hooked up with sony bdps350. it works, the dolby truhd/dts master audio light shows up just like my customers want to see. however, not 15 feet away, we have the exact same disc and player hooked up to an onkyo 606/polk tsi300/cs10 center/psw10/and m10 surrounds and the difference is night and day..the disc in question is top gun on blu ray and the scene where cruise is "keeping up international relations" with a MIG is our demo scene. the 6100, while sounding pretty good, just doesnt carry a robust sound to the back speakers, and IMO the sub lacks alot of punch. the center channel is EASILY the best speaker that comes in the set. the 606 just seems to output better quality sound, and almost all of our customers make the comment that the 606 sounds more "real" or "immersive". also said that the video looked crisper on the tv coming from the 606...same tv, same hdmi cables, same speaker wire, etc...so what im trying to say is, yes it is a great system. yes you will be happy with it on the short term. honestly my friend, i would save up the extra $200 or so that is would take to upgrade to some of the options that memebers here are offering. or just buy the reciever, 2 fronts, a sub, and center to start and then add your surrounds.you will be MUCH MUCH happier in the long term..happy hunting and keep us posted

After looking at your price break down, I am little confused that is if you have recommended Polk 5.1 Package then why would one require Polk Monitor 50's and Polk Monitor CS1 Center Speaker for Home theater setup? Please advice.

Because its cheaper to buy the package than it is to buy them seperately. They run about $50 ea seperately and Newegg.com has the set for $179!
You'll need the 6750's for the rear speakers.

Seems like you're just wandering around threads about HTiB trying to talk people into the same purchase that you made. It's always an option, but as this thread and many others have stated, there are clear-cut given reasons why the suggestions made are superior to a HTiB.

To answer some questions, no the 605/606 do not have cooling fans. I don't believe the 706 does either. As long as you have it in a well-ventilated area, you're fine. I will warn you that it can get hot in some enclosed entertainment centers.

I want to clarify that the Polk RM6750 and the Polk Monitor sets can be a good upgrade path with the following caveat- the Polk RM6750 center is just too weak to really keep up with Polk Monitor towers. It isn't timbre-matched and will sound anemic. That said, I did it for a few weeks in my upgrade path. Just be aware that it's not a long-term solution. Even my wife complained.
