Robin Hood (BBC) Season 1 = 1080i

I heard rumors that the Blu-Ray version runs at 1080i. I bought it today and yes, indeed it runs in 1080i. My Sharp Aquos displays the resolution of a video for two seconds after it starts and it said 1080i. I really hope Torchwood is 1080p.

It was pushing around 15 mbs on an indoor, dark scene, and over 25 mbs on an outdoor scene.

I just bought Torchwood on HD DVD in the UK (look, I have a player and it was £13 for the 6 disc set) and its 1080i, so I expect the BD in the UK is, and the BD in the US will be. The BD is also a 6 disc set when I'm pretty sure even on HD DVD it could have been a 3 or 4 disc set. (The BBC seem keen to copy the episode distribution off the DVD boxset, which it self was spread over excess discs as they in turn were keen to copy the episode distribution off the earlier 2 disc part season DVD releases)

Things for UK TV are made in 25/50 Hz frame rates and broadcast in 50i. To see these things in 60Hz displays they need to be standards converted to 60i as 50i isn't a standard in US displays. Most people seem to think of programs recorded in 1080i50 or 1080i60 as second class cousins to 1080p24. It's different image recording formats with different characteristics. If a program is recorded in 1080i you get 1080i.

What I don't get is why the heck was season 2 released only on DVD for now? Why not bring out the Blu at the same time? :P

Too bad. US programs that broadcast in 1080i tend to have 1080p versions for BD. Though I guess BBC programming is expensive enough without getting into this next upgrade...

That's funny as a lot of US programs are broadcast in 720p, yet get either 1080i or 1080p BD releases.

The broadcast format 1080i or 720p, is not the same as the original format, which on most major US shows is either 24fps film (16mm or 35mm) or 1080p cameras. Live or low budget programming is usually recorded in 1080i or 720p, and if released would be released in 1080i or 720p - these programs are generally sports, news programs, soap operas, local productions, etc. and are not very likely to be released on BD.

If the BBC recorded this series at 1080i50, which is very likely, then it is best delivered at 1080i50. Technically it could be deinterlaced and corrected for 1080p24, but there would be a significant loss of video quality.

I'm guessing there weren't enough sales of Series 1 on Blu here in the US, so Series 2 only got the DVD treament. I noticed that Series 3 is coming out on Friday on DVD, but haven't seen anything about it on Blu yet.

blimey, I'm amazed anybody even wants this series. Everybody I know hates it, and that even includes somebody I know who worked on the show.
80's 'Robin of Sherwood' is still by far the best TV version of Robin Hood.

Shooting something and broadcasting it are two different things. For instance, what about shows that are broadcasted in 720P? Should we assume it was captured (ahem, recorded) that way? Yet, the BD is 1080P.

So, I just got the UK version of Robin Hood here in the US and it is indeed 1080p even tho the slipcover says 1080i. Plays just fine and was cheaper then the US version even with shipping. Also, it got to me in 3 days from the UK. (not sure how that happened, got home today and it was in the mail)

Not to revive an old thread? But who was he that worked on it? Unless he was a producer or director or actor. It doesn't mean a lot that he worked on it.

You can get seasons 2 and 3 on blu from Germany.
