With a state of the art 4K scan no less... man would I kill to have some more classic anime get this same type of treatment.

I may have just missed it, but can you confirm this is both parts? Not spliced together or just part 1 etc?

It's both parts 1 and 2. One on each disc.

In the next couple of months I hope to be able to announce a new restoration project we'll be doing that involves a "lost" late period noir film. I can't tell you how excited I am to be able to restore a film noir. It's been my favorite genre of film since I was a child.

Stay tuned and have a great weekend!

I believe it's North America only. I'll need to confirm that though.

From an excellent interview with the cinematographer Rajeev Ravi...

What cameras and perforations did you use? Did you go digital too?

The first film was shot on 35mm cinemascope, with hawk lenses. Second film was shot completely on Super-35. We went digital only when we required it. Of course, all the sets had 5D Mk IIs, and 7Ds. I also made use of Sony CineAlta F900 R, an HD camera on which I had shot That Girls in Yellow Boots. I used it extensively for capturing the climax of GOW. Therefore, everything was mixed with 35mm cinemascope. Cinemascope does not have 3 perforations. Its lenses are different. It’s an old technology. Nowadays, no one talks about cinemascope, but we used it effectively.

You can read the interview in it's entirety here.

We discovered that several scenes were eliminated from the original film. All indications are that the original negative to these censored scenes was destroyed. BUT we found a 35mm print in Europe that still had the scenes intact!

While the quality isn't what you get from the original negative it holds up quite well. For anyone who has seen the film, you know how crazy it is - and that's the censored version! Now just imagine...what was cut out???

Here's a peek at the tamest of the censored material. You'll just have to buy a ticket and/or purchase the blu-ray to see it all.

note: This is a 2K downrez from a 4K scan of the European 35mm print. This is not a final restored image.

Recommendation: for the Blu-ray, include both censored & uncensored cuts via seamless branching. Although even if you don't include that woefully underused feature, I would still buy the Blu-ray

An uncensored version is good enough for me!

I should clarify...

The original Japanese theatrical version was the un-censored version. At some point since that debut, the film was edited/censored and the original negative for those edited scenes is gone.

Our intention is to release only the full original theatrical version of the film.

I just discovered this thread. Wow, very much looking forward the final product (Blu-ray).
Sure, both cuts would be the greatest gift for collectors.
Anyway, I'll buy the disc when it comes out, I'll definitely do it

I'm super excited. We just had our first full screening of the film. A "work-in-progress" screening. We're nearly finished with five of the film's six reels...and it's amazing!

Between this and Criterion's upcoming release of Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, it's a great year for surreal coming of age films!
