Pretty brutal review and a massive screw up by criterion. They can't let this go, this is a high profile title and should be fixed. Seems like the last couple Criterions I've wanted have all come with some controversy (scanners, don't look now and dressed to kill). I'm hoping that mulholland drive doesn't have any issues

stretching is worse than pan and scan IMO!
Story: In the lunchroom at a prior workplace, the 'average Joes' would change the settings to 16:9 for 4:3 SD channels, so the image would stretch to fill the screen. It drove me bonkers, and I would switch it back to 4:3, bars and all. A couple days later, TV is back to stretched. Eventually, I just put the 4:3 content at 'Zoom' which resulted in the top and bottom of the image being chopped off, but at least everything wasn't stretched. This actually worked out. The 'Joes' didn't bother since the image filled the screen. Lesser of two evils. Last edited by Brian81; 07-31-2015 at 04:22 PM. |

Criterion makes a rare misstep and people make it sound like nothing they do is of value. Get a grip, people ! Most of the time their product is fantastic and a lot of care goes into these releases. At least in this case there are decent alternatives, so no need to make this sound like the end of the world. I was quite happy with the Arrow release anyway and I'm glad I don't have to upgrade the Blu for the third time. |

The Optimum UK blu was supervised & approved by director Nicholas Roeg and has a commentary by him. Also, the colors more accurately reflect my memories of seeing the film multiple times in the theater. Don't Look Now is one of my favorite films and I would've double-dipped for the Criterion if I thought it was warranted. Back on topic: I'm happy to stick with the Arrow DTK disc. Even if the warped images get fixed, the color looks far too greenish and muted to me. |

Now that a second review has surfaced that confirms the stretching, I will agree it is not a good transfer. I'll stick with my thoughts that I like having more information on the sides. If it did not distort the shot and looked normal I would stick with my opinion that it looks better. Even with the change with the color timing.
Thankfully this is not high on my list to purchase, Day for Night and Two Days One Night are my top choices for Criterion's August slate. From the reviews I have seen, they look amazing. |
