Default FX's The Bastard Executioner

FX's 'Bastard Executioner' Cast Includes Kurt Sutter, Katey Sagal, Stephen Moyer

Quote:
The cast also includes 'The Americans' star Matthew Rhys, Sam Spruell and Lee Jones in the period drama that marks Sutter's follow-up to 'Sons of Anarchy.'

Kurt Sutter and FX have set a cast of familiar faces and newcomers for its period drama pilot The Bastard Executioner.

The Bastard Executioner centers on a former warrior knight in King Edward I's charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. But when the violence finds him again, he's forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.

Newcomer Lee Jones, an Australian theater actor, will star as Wilkin Brattle, the imposing and emotionally deep yet spiritually tortured former knight in charge of King Edward I. He now lives a simple agrarian life. He's repped by Emery Entertainment.

True Blood alum Stephen Moyer will co-star as Milus Corbett, a street-smart and noble savvy who was one of Ventris' marshals in the army. He now serves as his chamberlain, chancellor and justiciar — and friend and drinking mate. The actor, who memorably had a role in NBC's live Sound of Music, is repped by WME.

Katey Sagal, who was Sutter's leading lady in Sons of Anarchy, will star as Annora of the Alders, a woman described as prescient, mystical and beautiful who offers predictions, cures and potions. Sagal, who also happens to be married to Sutter, is repped by WME.

Flora Spencer-Longhurst is set as Baroness Lowry "Love" Aberffraw Ventris. As cunning as she is kind and beautiful, the character hails from a wealthy Welsh family and married Ventris at 17 to protect her family's land. Her noble duties always in conflict with her Welsh pride. Spencer-Longhurst is represented by United Agents.

Sutter, as he did with Sons of Anarchy, will also have an on-screen role and play a The Dark Mute, the mate and guardian of Annora (Sagal). The character rarely speaks and no one's ever seen his face. Sutter is represented by WME.

Sam Spruell (Snow White and the Huntsman, The Hurt Locker) is set as Toran Prichard, an archer under Madog Llywelyn in the last major Welsh rebellion. He put down the bow and picked up the hoe and is Wilkin's best mate. Spruell is with by ICM and Silver Lining Entertainment.

Darren Evans (Galavant) will star as Ash y Goedwig, a trapper and orphan "of the woods" who is a friend to Wilkin. Evans is with by Troika.
Danny Sapani (Trance, Penny Dreadful) will portray Berber the Moor: A large, educated man who is a converted Muslim and farmer as well as a friend to Wilkin. Sapani is with Gordon and French.

Timothy V. Murphy (Sons of Anarchy) will play Father Ruskin, a brawny yet gentle man with a bottled fury who is a former soldier that Left the military for the seminary. He's a priest, rector and teacher of the court. Murphy is represented by SDB Partners.

Sarah White will play as Isabel Kiffin, Lady Love's handmaiden and trusted confidant. White is represented by Gendler & Kelly and APC.
Sarah Sweeny rounds out the cast as Jessamy Maddox, described as pretty but hardened by abuse, she's the executioner’s wife. Sweeny is with Lou Coulson Associates.

Additionally, Matthew Rhys (The Americans) has booked a guest starring role as Gruffudd y Blaidd, the leader of the Welsh rebels, Byth Encil. The role is not expected to impact his co-starring role on FX's The Americans. Rhys is with WME and Management 360.

Sutter will write and exec produce alongside his Sons of Anarchy director/exec producer Paris Barclay, who will helm the pilot. The Fox 21, Imagine TV and FX Productions drama also will be exec produced by Imagine's Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo.

Production begins March 19 in Wales.

It's officially ordered to series now and will be premiering in the fall.

Quote:
FX Orders Kurt Sutter's 'The Bastard Executioner' to Series

FX is moving forward with Kurt Sutter's next act.

The cable network has ordered a 10-episode first season of his ambitious, gory and hotly anticipated period piece, The Bastard Executioner. The Sons of Anarchy creator recently wrapped production on the pilot for the late-Middle Ages-set drama, which is shooting in Wales. Production will resume this summer before bowing on FX this fall.

Bastard Executioner tells the story of a warrior knight in King Edward I’s charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. When that violence finds him again, however, he's forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all. The network has high hopes for the fast-tracked series and its creator, who concluded Sons with its most watched season in December. (The latter averaged an impressive 11.7 million total viewers, 7.5 million of them in the coveted 18 to 49 demo.)

“From his important contributions to The Shield to his epic run on Sons of Anarchy, Kurt has been one of FX’s most visionary artists, and we are proud to get him back on the air so soon after the unquestionable success of Sons,” FX chief John Landgraf said in a statement. Added Fox TV Group chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman, whose Fox 21 TV Studios will produce the project with FX Productions: “The Bastard Executioner, written by Kurt and directed by the talented Paris Barclay, is dangerous, brilliant, emotional and undeniable. This is the perfect follow-up to Sons and another huge event series for FX from Fox 21TVS and FXP. Viewers are in for a wild and spellbinding ride.”

Bastard Executioner was created by Sutter, who will serve as an exec producer alongside Empire's Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo and Sons collaborator Barclay. The cast will feature Sutter's wife and Sons star Katey Sagal as well as Lee Jones , Stephen Moyer, Flora Spencer-Longhurst, Sam Spruell, Darren Evans, Danny Sapani, Timothy V. Murphy, Sarah White, Sarah Sweeney, Elen Rhys, Ethan Griffiths and guest star Matthew Rhys.

“I love history. I love theology. I love blood. It's been very satisfying weaving fact and fiction to create a new mythology that combines all these elements. And with this extraordinary cast — Stephen Moyer, Katey Sagal and newcomer Lee Jones — this world explodes on screen," said Sutter, adding: "I love working with FX and Fox21TVS. They've been my family for 15 years. They not only tolerate me, they embrace my extremely disturbing storytelling sensibilities.”

After the trainwreck last few seasons of S.O.A. (especially Season 7) I'm pretty reluctant to watch anything Sutter has put his paws on. I'll probably give it a shot but it will be on a short leash.

There are FAR MORE beautiful women in hollywood he could have cast in that role

As long as she's as good as she was as Gemma, that's all that really matters.

You make me sad. Katey Segal is a stunning woman for her age.

Yeah, pretty much this. Sutter is just trying to cash in on Game of Thrones by churning out 90 minutes of medieval bro-hugs weekly.

Say what you want about the last season (I still liked it, but I see why some wouldn't have), but neither comment could be further from the truth. He didn't create two of the most popular and well respected series in FX history by accident.

Not saying you have to watch this obviously. To each their own.

Nah man, Irish was one of the best, the last two seasons were far and away the worst, the rest were all pretty good, guilty pleasures of mine.

After LOTR was popular over 10 years ago, we saw a lot of movies try and emulate the success (and fail miserably).

This show feels like a television executive saw the success of Game of Thrones and wants to capitalize on it.

Sutter didn't create two of the most respected series in FX history. He was a writer on The Shield and eventually became a producer but the show was created by Shawn Ryan. Sons of Anarchy was the first show he created.

LOL at the title!

Seems like a fairly obvious attempt to go after that Game of Thrones audience.

That title though.

...so absurd it might actually work.

...or be a total disaster.

So..... anyone actually watch the pilot episode? I liked how the last 30 minutes came together - the rest of the show was just ok. They're certainly going all in in the graphic violence department.

I watched the pilot and enjoyed the 2nd half of it too. 1st half didn't thrill me but being a pilot episode I knew they usually take a while to get into the meat and bones of the story.

I do like where the show is heading and I will continue to watch it.
