I personally, have a live and let live policy with Bose.

I will by no means bash them as mercilessly and fiercely as others, but I also don't really care if you own them. If they make you happy, so be it - but I might hint at some better options in that same price range!

My only problem with Bose is how it has proliferated the masses into believing it is the pinnacle of sound. When I mentioned to my friends I was upgrading my sound system from the HTiB I used to own, they all seemed to say, "Oh, you're going to Bose?" At which point I had to delve into it all and try to steer them right. This one conversation I had with a friend of mine was particularly funny...he asked if I was going to Bose, I said, No, Bose isn't good enough for what I need - he responds with, Don't tell me you're going with JBL or Sony speakers or something!

Nope, friend, with Bowers and Wilkins. I didn't see the need to explain more.

NO HIGHS? NO LOWS? MUST BE BOSE!

thats what i say. im sorry but i cannot stand the sound that comes out of these speakers. i'd much rather take some boston or polk audio anyday... if you still want bose speakers, invest in an equalizer.

In my line of work I'm in and out of a lot of peoples houses. It's mind boggling the number of people who consider themselves audio experts because they bought a Bose system. The same people also brag about their 1080p Monster cables. All I can do is smile. Now if they ask my opinion I'll politely suggest a couple HT shops in town and point them to Blue Jeans Cable. Other than that, they think they are happy so I let them carry on with the illusion.

LMAO. I just figured out the chairman of Bose is a brown guy. That might explain why theyre so cheap. :/ (yes, i am brown. Yet i hate this guy)

If you like bose, there are 3 explanations:

1. The only other speakers you have heard are your TV's built in ones.
2. If you have heard other real speakers, you havent been able to compare them to Bose, thanks to their clever marketing tactics.
3. You need to clean out your ear-wax. No really, it can get serious.

Im probably gonna get banned.

Mr.Hidef stop postwhoring.

That being said.... Bose are great for what they are, but you also pay way too much for what they are... I've rarely seen another small speaker with the sound quality of Bose, but they are out there... and for less money. But if size is an issue the Bose speakers are a good option for many people who cant do in-wall or in-ceiling speakers. If size is not an issue, you can get speakers that aren't a ton larger but sound tons better... like any decent bookshelf speaker.

Most of us agree that we don't particularly like Bose. Let's get back to the OP's original question - Would the Bose 301 - if purchased at a decent price ($100 or less persay) make a good rear channel speaker. With my experience and if the OP can pull it off - I would say....yes Taking into consideration his standing. I bought my pair of 901's for $25.00 including the active eq - I wouldn't dare pass up a deal like that - even though I don't care for Bose. They are coming in handy for a PA setup ! Don't get me wrong I have had enough experience with Bose to not put them in my rig (It usually happened when I tried the estetically pleasing approach - when my wife heard the worst incarnation {AM5's and AM7's} she promptly ordered me to get real speakers like I used to have - reguardless of their size - OH HAPPY DAY it was ) Never went back to Bose since 1993 - just bought the 901's because of the deal and I need some PA speakers - They were perfect for that particular job.

*Edit –In all fairness to “those who Bose”, the title of the thread is Bose bashing, and I’m sure many people came here expecting that to be the theme of the thread

FWIW – I was scanning the ads on craigslist.com when I saw an ad for B&W surround speakers. Out of curiosity, I checked it out. It was for 4 B&W DM302 speakers. The owner had been using them as surround speakers, so they had very little use on them. I am a fan of small bookshelf speakers for front mains, so I was intrigued. He was only asking $100 for a pair, and I thought “wow, I can get a quality pair of B&W high-end speakers for only $100 – YEAH!”

I looked up an old review from Stereophile, and they got glowing remarks, so I was set. Went to the guys house, looked over the speakers, decided they looked good – it was a done deal. It was with great anticipation that I hooked them up & started listening. The first thing I noticed was they have gobs of detail. The next thing I noticed was they were very bright. For the heck of it, I went online to look up other reviews. Read one where the reviewer was comparing 4 pair of small bookshelf speakers, including the B&W’s. His finding was that he liked everything about the DM302’s except their top end. Dude was spot on in his assessment, as far as my ears were concerned.

So, it just goes to show that no matter what badge a speaker might carry is NO guarantee of qualities that fit everyone’s liking. I would say that someone who likes the version of Polk speakers just prior to their current offerings (with the silver colored soft dome tweeters) would love these speakers. As for me, well, looks like I’ll be listing them for sale.

So yes, my credo of “if it sounds good to you” lives on. As to the original post, if you like the direct/reflected sound, I would encourage you to listen to the Mirage Omnipolar speakers.

BTW Mr. HiDef – I know we got off to a rough start, but I am also from MN, and in the spirit of the day – are you going to the fair?
