Does the UK DVD have any special features? I might end up watching it on BFI Player, at least that retains the HD. I'd import the US release if it's an All Regions disk (and affordable). It's a shame although hardly surprising that the Region B releases don't have any English subtitles.

I didn't think Foxcatcher was bad so much as annoying and the nose prosthetic was a gimmicky distraction. I see what they were going for with the movie's message though. No interest in re-watching it. The Act of Killing was maybe a bit rough around the edges, but essential viewing for an insight into genocidal monsters, I just don't know how many more times I could sit through it. The other night while watching the Hungarian film White God, I had a bit of trouble making it through the (simulated) dog fight sequence and other scenes of cruelty (some offscreen and just suggested by sound effects), but there were some great sequences that really made up for it, putting it in my top 15 of 2014. The scenes of hundreds of dogs running through the streets angry about their mistreatment is pretty impressive just from a filmmaking logistics standpoint. I wish Plain would give that film a release, but they usually celebrate outstanding performances by human actors not canines. Quote:
A LOT of anime tv series really do suck and I mostly gave up on that stuff years ago, aside from Studio Ghibli films. I did make a LIST here of some anime films, OAVs and series that I found worth watching back in my anime years when my friends bought lots of dvds and LDs that I could watch for free, but it's an expensive hobby to avoid especially if you already spend $ on Korean Blu-rays. Just rent the major stuff worth seeing and avoid the rest. I now wish I'd spent most of that time catching up on classic foreign films instead. Quote:

I have The Master dvd rented from the library sitting nearby awaiting my eventual re-watch to see if I like it better the 2nd time around, but I have some newer films rented that I want to get around to first. Last edited by Optical Disc OCD; 08-21-2015 at 04:59 AM. |

I also saw Tom at the Farm last night, and I gotta say, I really enjoyed it. Even though it was made before Mommy, it also just got a US release. So I have it in my top 10 of 2015 list at the moment. I'm looking forward to seeing Mommy now, and fully support Plain releasing any and all Dolan films. |

My favourite of the year btw is Andrew Haigh's 45 Year, which I just recently saw at a local festival. What a brilliant piece of cinema. |

Ah, the unending conundrum of deciding upon release years for lists. American critics go by US release because their readers have little opportunity to see it in its overseas release and neither do critics unless seen at a festival. The odd case is when a movie makes it on a critics list decades after its foreign release, usually due to a new restoration giving it a US debut or re-release (Melville's 1969 classic Army of Shadows hit critics top ten of year list for 2006 back and the previously barely seen 1978 American indie film Killer of Sheep made lists for 2007). For foreign released movies like Snowpiercer, I place them on both lists and use asterisks before the title (usually with original release year underlined after director, sometimes using 'ff' after year if it had early festival release). *= released overseas in an earlier year, **= released in USA the following year. The number in exponential form after the ')' is how many times I've seen the film (useful for deciding what to re-watch to refine/decide ranking of films). For my master list of films seen I go by year of original theatrical release in country of origin for foreign films. TITLE (DIRECTOR 201x; COUNTRY) Last edited by Optical Disc OCD; 08-21-2015 at 08:17 PM. Reason: potential for derailing topic too much |

So would you consider that a 2015 or 2016 film? I'm gonna go ahead and list it as 2016 for my purposes. |

Though Wikipedia calls The Witch a 2015 film (and so does IMDb). But I'll check the theatrical release date, which will eventually say 2016, but list also the film festival premiere date. So, for my master list I might list it as: The Witch (Robert Eggers 2015ff/2016) *names of actors with actors names in red italicized text and also maybe a one sentence description on lesser known titles whose plot I might forget (i.e. semi-obscure old film noir titles sometimes tend to blur together in my head if I don't write short descriptions on my 5,000+ films seen master list) I'd most likely put it on my 'of the year' list for 2016. I know The Witch is only a movie and it might even be a good one, but its amusing that many years after the infamous Salem Witch Trials were recognized as a sham largely influenced by vengeful conflicts between neighbors and vile, greedy attempts to annex other people's land (a witch can't own property), we still make movies that act as if there really were witches in New England. Salem-related films kinda irk me because its related to historical incidents where innocent people were actually killed there due to hysterical religious nonsense. Though I guess it could be worse and filmmakers could be making 'blood libel' films instead of Salem nonsense. I say this despite being a big fan of Euro horror films like The Wicker Man (1973) and stuff like M.Reeves' Witchfinder General and the 1960s Hammer horror film The Devil Rides Out (*Christopher Lee). I recommend Benjamin Christensen's 1920s silent classic Häxan to any horror fan who hasn't seen it. Last edited by Optical Disc OCD; 08-21-2015 at 09:01 PM. |

While We're Young premiered in TIFF 2014 but the first wider release date was 27th of March 2015, so it is a 2015 release. That's how I see it. |
