Oh please.. spare me the pedantics! I'm not worrying about offending a Director (or his fans) that's a long time dead by shortening his name.

I have it but have never seen it but it should be good it stars Jack Nicholson and was directed by Stanley Kubrick.

I think I got mine for about 10 bucks shipped. Totally worth it.
Thank you.

I have a friend who was really into that film, he talked a lot about a certain part.

Really love the hidden messages and the many many ways Kubrick screws with the viewer.

I love The Shining, but The Vanishing is a very different kind of horror film. Quite literally, this may be the first time I've ever heard a negative thing said about the latter.

Arrogant though this advice always sounds, maybe give it another try? It's one of those films that manages to terrify on several different levels. The other day I was driving through a tunnel, thought about The Vanishing, and actually shuddered.

Why not you just show respect to people who you don't know?

Yeah after watching the documentary Room 237, it kinda opens it up a bit more.
[Show spoiler] Crazy ones are Jack reading Playgirl in the lobby and all of the stuff that runs on electricity seem to be not plugged in lights, tv etc.

That one isn't bad but Kubrick's version is my preferred one for a movie.

The shorter cut is amazeballs, the longer cut not so much, but still very good.

I never said I think it's a bad movie.

I just don't find it to be the least bit "terrifying."

Which is the word Kubrick used to describe it.

Disturbing...yes.

Creepy...yes.

Terrifying...no.

The Vanishing is good, especially the ending, but The Shining is just significantly better all around.

Better photography, better acting, better production values and WAY BETTER music.

...I also find The Shining to be a more thought-provoking mind freak.

Oh please, lighten up. In case you cannot tell, "lol" and the emoticons meant it was in jest. I went out of my way to make sure that was clear.

I wasn't aware that this was disrespectful. By who's measures? Some jumped up fans that want to dictate whether I should abbreviate a name in writing?
If I wrote SK for Stephen King, MB for Michael Bay, RS for Ridley Scott, JC for James Cameron that's also disrespectful or derogatory?

Wind your neck in and go find someone else to pick at. I'm not playing your little bickering b!tch fest games.

Are any of the international releases of The Shining the open matte version pillarboxed?

I'd like to see a blu-ray transfer of the open matte version... why? Well, according to at least one source there are additional clues about the story that appear outside of the widescreen matte. Also, Kubrick took very careful consideration and composed each shot so that both 1.33 and 1.85 presentations would be framed artistically.

The 1:33:1 version on DVD looks bad in comparison to the 1:85:1 on BD.
So much of the picture seems to be missing on the DVD version.

Yeah, you're right, I compared one of the screens of the BD here to my open matte DVD. There's a bit missing from left to right, but that's a frequent occurrence with older open matte releases for home video. Not sure what this DVD's excuse is though, anyways, a fully open matte BD would be welcome in my collection anytime.

I much prefer the BD shot. The top added on the DVD takes away from the characters in the image.
