I refuse to believe that people aren't aware of blu-ray. You can't walk into a Wal-Mart or Target without seeing piles of them as you walk by. It's more a matter of people being ignorant to the benefits of blu-ray.

There must've be something wrong with the settings on the TV. Ordinary blu rays are bound to look even better on 4K TVs just like we know how upscaled SD looks better on HD TVs than native SD looked on old box TVs. |

Very much a we'll see situation, but I would imagine UHD will be on thin ice from day one. Studios are focused on digital and I don't think they care what disc format carries their niche collectors market through the next decade when it comes down to it. |

I for one will not bother to upscale. I had a decent (still do) size dvd collection and many are still not on BD, or not worth the upgrade. I now have a decent size BD collection, having rebought many same titles. Some VHS-dvd-dvd s.e.- BD and it's possible on a few to jump to a better BD now, then one which came out in 2007 for example.
I really notice how good most BDs are over their dvd format versions. I'm lucky to own on BD 99% of my all time favourite movies, from childhood to recent times. I'm more then happy how Jaws, Terminator, Aliens, Star Wars, BTTF, Bond films, Indiana Jones and more look on BD. I'm lucky enough to have a good system and a 50" Panasonic tv. Even some DVDs still look really good, maybe cause I remember VHS? Could I be bothered to through more money at yet another format? Nah. Mainly the repeated cost, but mostly because I've read you'll need a tv around 120" to even notice the benefit. Will smaller labels like Arrow bother to invest into the cost of UHD production? If WB, Sony or Universal can't be bothered with the cost of HD releases for catalogue titles, yet to be on BD 10 yrs on due to (apparent) low demand. Why will they now spend maybe double to release them? I also don't think the leap in quality, unless I spend £2k on a giant TV etc, knock my lounge into my dining room to get the required 80 ft viewing distance etc etc etc, will be as noticeable as BD is. I think if you're happy, more then satisfied with what you're watching it won't be worth the cost or drama and arguments over quality. How can a proper studio restored film like WB and Goodfellas, approved by Marty himself get better? (I don't own it but..) It's now meant to have the correct colours, sound, still look real film like with the correct grain etc. what will UHD do to it? Make it look sharper and cleaner? Doesn't that then take away the correct colour, grain and just look waxy and unrealistic? What I might fold and do is upgrade the odd UHD disc, IF, reviews and forum posters confirm its better on a normal BD system and tv then it's previous BD release and I agree it could look better. A Nightmare on Elm St. collection with more extras and PQ/AQ would fall into that category. A UHD release of the Alien set wouldn't. |

You'll have to buy a UHD player to play UHD discs. You can use a UHD player on a 1080p TV (and probably even a 720p TV), but it won't look any better than regular Blu-ray.

And unless anyone is viewing the UHD on 120" on larger tv/projector I wouldn't even consider your views on picture quality, not for a split second. |

That's narrow-minded. I have looked at 60" 4K displays playing a BD without any sharpness or DNR added from my normal viewing distance of about 9' and the difference is still night and day. I can only imagine what a UHD disc will look like.

I just don't see the point since most studio films are still finished at 2k. That means that the UHD master will just be a fancy upscale from 2k and that is just not worth the buy-in cost IMO. I'll give it a second look when, or if, the studios start finishing all there films at 4k.

It's been proven you need something upwards of 100" to notice.
