Even though Toho will release it without English subtitles, I am importing the Japanese Blu-ray on day one the pre-order pops up on Amazon Japan.

Since I only understand maybe about two dozen words in Japanese, I will be a little more patient and wait for the official US Blu release.

If it gets any kind of theatrical release in the US at all it will obviously be a very limited kind of thing, and the ones who'd seek it out would mostly be Godzilla/kaiju fans and people generally interested in Japanese cinema and pop culture, so I don't think there'd be many audience members mocking it or anything.

Same, I'll wait for the inevitable American and European releases. I can't see it taking that long, Godzilla is popular and the movie will be brand new so it's going to attract the attention of a lot of distributors.

People mocking it won't be an issue, the real issue is will it even get released theatrically? It won't make enough to justify a wide release as it is a very niche movie. But if does come to theaters near me, you can bet I will be there.

I would be surprised if Sony didn't already have a deal locked in, considering they have had the home video license for most of the Heisei and Millennium series for about two decades now.

I doubt it. The same Sony who let the rights revert back to Toho on Godzilla vs the Sea Monster, Son of Godzilla, Godzilla vs the Smog Monster, Godzilla vs Gigan, and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla? I think their interest peaked in the early-mid 2000's.

I'd say most likely Warner will release it. Mostly because they distribute Legendary's Godzilla series and thus they have more attachment to Godzilla than any other American studio. They will probably even put promotion for their Godzilla 2 in the extras for the Toho movie. I highly doubt Toho would object in anyway. Remember that Toho gets licensing fees and Japanese distribution and Merchandising rights for Legendary movies for a movie that they invest nothing into the production for. Its free money

I thought Godzilla was with Universal now because of Legendary's studio jump?

Godzilla's Hollywood incarnation is through Universal, Toho should be able to release it under whatever studio they chose.

No doubt Toho should be able to release it with whoever they please but given that at the moment Sony has the most Godzilla movies in their catalog with a total of 11 movies, That's why I am leaning towards them releasing it.

On the other hand, Legendary could have all North American rights to the character and they might distribute through Universal.

Godzilla 2 is not with Universal, it's with Warner Bros. They are still distributing the sequels despite the Legendary/Universal deal.

Nope. Godzilla sequels are still distributed by Warner. Most likely so will the Toho movie in the states. Keep in mind it will probably be into 2017 before this is ready for an American blu-Ray release so I suspect it will be used to promote Godzilla 2. By then Godzilla 2 will be in pre production so a feature on the disc promoting Godzilla 2 I see as very likely

I hate it when I am wrong... I just did some googling to see where I went wrong, and truth is I just assumed that Legendary got sole custody of Godzilla, but the fact is that Legendary and WB share custody.

Now I will sit in the corner with my dunce cap.

I doubt Warner would release this. They probably don't want American audiences thinking this is in some way their follow up to their 2014 blockbuster or that they had any type of involvement in its production.

They'll probably want to distance themselves from this film as much as possible and want to steer clear of a film that may or may not include the "man in a rubber suit stomping on miniature sets that is hilariously dubbed " or some other sub-par effects that the Japanese productions are known for. This could potentially hurt their own sequel coming in 2018 and negatively impact production and influence moviegoers decision to invest their hard earned money to see any Godzilla follow up if their 2016 Godzilla is deemed "cheesy" by American audiences.

I think Sony may release it or an independent label. But that being said I'm really looking forward to this being a huge fan of the series.
