Italians have an anti-science thing going on unfortunately, I once had a fight with my brother because I tried to explain to him that Homeopathy was bullshit, even my science teacher essentially told me not to bother with black holes implying that they were some sort of sci-fi crap (to be fair, she was a geologist, not the first time someone expert in a certain field is incredibly ignorant in others).
The reason I like Doctor Who or the Fantastic Four is that for once the scientist, however flawed he might be, he is undisputably the HERO, instead of the villain.

I also add that many tendencies in pop culture here are heavily influenced by american pop culture, one of our longest running comics is a Western (Tex Willer) and another is the Mickey Mouse magazine, and 90% of TV fiction that isn't complete rubbish is imported and dubbed american shows.
When I stumbled into english stuff I found it mightly refreshing because they don't seem to have the same hang-ups against heroes that don't punch/shoot things as the americans or at least not as strong.

Agreed. It's also what makes Star Trek great.

Too often we see in movies, "science" is something to be scared of.

I think that it's just that people who don't embrace science are usually too stupid to be credible threats as villains.

To be fair to Italians, the average American posting here gets most of their scientific knowledge (uses the word with maximum creativity) from TV and Movies. Which, in reality, means they are pretty damned ignorant themselves.

Well I think on BD.com one's scientific knowledge depends on the films one has watched. Personally, I think you are not taking Japanese cinema into enough consideration here.
