my guess would be that the channel you have your ps3 set on in your receiver, has a volume level on either the entire source, or separate levels for each speaker, and they're just cranked.

for instance, my denon receiver you can adjust the input gain on each input as well as each individual speaker level input for the overall output. i dont have a ps3, so i cant say whether or not there are any level adjustments on that machine itself, but that could be it too.

bottom line, something is turned up way too loud is my guess.
right my receiver has the same option i think, there is an option to adjust the gain through an equalizer, i jus thave no clue how to use it. Also when im playing the ps3 the hiss is most noticable when playing at a volume of 0
