A bad master is a bad master, I do understand that. What I'm saying is that something finished ON FILM like your Batman Begins (or, say, the Scream movies which look bloody awful on Blu, pardon the pun) can yield a new 4K transfer any time the content providers so wish. If something gets a poor Blu-Ray with lots of noise reduction or sharpening that doesn't automatically mean that the original underlying elements are similarly afflicted, they're still sitting snugly in their climate-controlled vault waiting to be transferred anew.

If you're saying you think that the studios will be too lazy to bust out new transfers for UHD then I understand that point too, but a lot of catalogue masters are sub-par for HD, never mind UHD, so if the studios start upscaling that shit then they'll be found out very quickly and could do irreparable harm to a format which needs everything to go right if it's to have any kind of success.

Will we see 4K upscales of modern 2K finished DI shows (which look so good to begin with that they upscale deliciously well)? Possibly, although a straight-up 1080p encode with the rest of UHD's bells and whistles (WCG, HDR, 10-bit) added on might be more likely, and ultimately less misleading. Time will tell.
