I get why Mad Max lives in a world where there is apparently no law enforcement whatsoever.

I can't say the same for John Wick.

I cannot stress enough how ridiculously patronizing posts like these are.

Do we simply turn "saturation" down to "0"?

I don't even know if my TV has a saturation option.

If it does, I can't find it.

I think "color" would be the same.
More color = More saturation.
Less color = less saturation.
But I'm not home to check -

I don't remember any great conversations or scenes with profound dialogue that delved into the issues behind the devolution of civilization or the political remnants of a post-apocalyptic society.

I liked the film and plan to watch it again very soon.

But all I saw the first time was a lot of adrenaline-fueled action sequences.

...and yeah they were fun.

And in response to your edit, there was a lot of CGI in most of the major scenes. Not as bad as a Star Wars prequel, but a long ways away from the gritty naturalism of the original trilogy.
There's nothing mindless about the action in the film. Every bit of action, every set-piece, is there to service the story. The thing is, the story is not spoonfed to you - you have to pay attention to the little things: reactions, changes in facial expressions, whispered dialog coming from off-camera, etc.

Between the fanatical religious cult - complete with disciples brainwashed into wanting to die in service of their prophet/savior (Joe) in order to be reborn in their version of a heaven (Valhalla) - and the whole post-apocalypse "he who controls the water/gas/bullets controls the people" aspect, I can't see how anyone could describe it as just another "mindless action movie." And that's not even touching on the issues of gender roles or the whole "elderly patriarch needs a strong, healthy heir to pass everything down to" bit.

To each their own, but I would definitely give it a second watch. And maybe take a look at some of the docs - there's a ton of amazing stuntwork in this film. A lot of it had to be comped into the frame, but a ton of it was really shot.

Granted, I'm not the most objective person when it comes to this movie, because I freaking love it, so there's that...

Are you telling me that I can watch any film in my collection in black and white simply by turn the color down to zero?

...I can watch Chinatown in black and white?

...Blade Runner in black and white?

Of course, but it's not "real" black and white. In other words, it's not what you would get if the film was actually shot in b&w, nor is it what you would get if you actually went into a suite and timed the film properly to be b&w (like the Mist or the b&w version of Fury Road that will probably be released in a year or so.)

It is what it is - a novelty. It can still give you some cool images, depending on the original footage, of course.

Absolutely correct. It works great with these films:

The Crow
Mad Max 2
Star Wars
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Chinatown
Blade Runner
Batman
Batman Returns
Public Enemies
The Lords of Salem
The Woman in Black

No, it's because the film is awesome. The film is a soft R anyway.

Miller reveals all the necessary information without stopping the film to spell out things for the audience, and often through visuals. And they do spell out the message of the film clearly: 'We are not things,' 'our babies will not be warlords.' Furiosa is taking the women to a place where she knows they will be safe from a life like hers, to keep their children safe, particularly if they are girls, who for all we know would be killed the moment they are born. It's not the most groundbreaking message, but it's an important one, even today. And even Max gets some character development as at first we see he has become a damaged lone haunted by events that we have never seen, and he is given a reason to keep going.
I'm going to spoiler tag my whole response for those wandering in who haven't seen the film:

[Show spoiler]I think one of the more interesting things about the film is that Furiosa's primary motivation isn't altruism or typical action-movie heroics - it's revenge. She's helping the women, but more importantly, she's hurting Joe, who hurt her many years ago. We don't know everything that was done to her, but we know she was taken from her home (along with her mother) when she was young and her mother died within three days of that happening.

One of the most powerful lines in the film often gets overlooked, but the simple "Remember me?" she growls at Joe right before killing him says so much. I've since read an interview in EW where Theron basically confirms that Furiosa's main concern was taking something precious away from Joe in order to hurt him.

Man, I love this movie.

I've heard Raiders of the Lost Ark works great this way.

Do we know for sure that the B&W version of Fury Road is going to be "properly timed" and that it won't just have the color taken out?

Nothing I've heard or read says anything on that issue.

P.S. Those desaturated shots of The Road Warrior actually look pretty cool. To be honest, I find that much more visually appealing, and fitting, than the actual look of the film.
