I plan to start buying the combo packs early on, but I'm not sure about the player. There's a lot more information we need to learn before this all comes together. So far, Samsung says they're still finalizing the specifications of their first player. So they really don't have much to tell us yet. 'Tis the waiting game.

But since its looking like most of the first titles will be combo packs I will also join you in buying them day one on any new releases. Saves me the trouble of ever having to buy a movie twice again ![]() |

I think the whole UHD idea will be different to Blu-ray.
Looking back the whole push for Blu-ray - although no one actually said it - was to ultimately replace DVD. All of your DVDs were going to come out on Blu-ray, and even Stevie Wonder would see the difference. But now? I suspect it may be a little less of a hard sell, less of a push. Have lots of DVDs/Blu-rays? Fine. Don't replace them all. Just buy your new releases in UHD. After all, your 'old' films won't benefit too much anyway (I'm not saying that's true or not, just that this'll be the perception). Go into your local TV store - how many flat panels are SD? Can you find even one? HD by default. And so it'll go with discs. Evolution rather than revolution. Maybe. Steve W |

I think that is an interesting point, Steve.
By and large, catalog titles on Blu-ray have not been a success and just not enough people decided to replace all of their large DVD catalog collections. I think the studios learned that and are now taking a different approach or more evolutionary as you say. |

That's quite honestly ridiculous, considering most new films are still finished at 2K. It's the older films that would actually benefit the most.
And if the studios wanted this to be an "evolution" of the Blu-ray format, they'd have to stop releasing the regular BD editions and just sell the UHD packages. But they won't, and therefore it will be seen as a "new format", not an evolution. |

I noticed that, they don't even say UHD BD just UHD + BD + Digital Copy. I thought the discs were going to be called UHD BDs? but as you said good old Fox for screwing up their promo artwork and for sticking 4K in the mix.

This is all going to be pretty straight forward for me.
Just as a matter of progressing technology, I expect to one day own a UHD Blu-ray player and a 4k TV. But buying into the UHD BD format is entirely a matter of available content and nothing else. I know people are already arguing about the color of the cases and I'm sure they'll want everything to come with a slipcover. It's as simple as this: as soon as two dozen, classic and deep catalogue titles are announced, I'm going to really sit-up and take notice. I have zero interest in the announced Fox titles...and that's ok because everybody has different taste. I buy catalogue titles almost exclusively. Kino, Olive and Shout/Scream account for about 75% of my purchases in the last year (I have over 850 BDs). I'd like to know what WB, Paramount, Universal and various smaller labels have in store. If I look at the available UHD BD titles one day and I see: THE WIZARD OF OZ, OKLAHOMA!, GILDA, HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, PAL JOEY and such , then I'll say, "OK, you definitely have my attention UHD BD". But until I see a title that I'm at least partially intersted in, I'm just going to sit back and not concern myself with the issue. |

So everybody concerned about the look of the cases is free to argue that point amongst themselves. |

Once UHD player reach under $200 I'll upgrade and get a 4k TV as well. I'm sure I'm not as informed as many people here about 4k but it seems like there is not a standard yet for what 4K is going to be. I'm probablly wrong about that but it's the impression I get. Last thing I would want is to spend a bunch of money and find out I didn't buy the right equipment. The idea of watching the latest movies on UHD and on a 4K TV is exciting to me. That being said I'm not an early adopter and would prefer to have all the kinks worked out before I drop the cash to upgrade.
