The DVD is rough, no doubt, but there is nothing wrong with the current BD release.

If the upcoming release betters it, then so be it. but it isn't a title that I would consider needing a remaster.

What is going to be interesting, is how it is going to look in terms of grading. We all know Mann loves to tinker with his films on home media.

I watched it just a week ago and it looks/sounds great. I really don't understand the hate for it. If there's a new 4K scan then sure, that's great. But it's not necessary. As for the audio, I get the complaints about it being too quiet and too loud, but I really like the mix that way.

I didn't dislike it before, but after listening to the mix on the Japanese release, I definitely prefer that one. I honestly don't mean to sound rude or snobby when I say this, but I think that those who have listened to both versions are more qualified to criticize the audio on the Warner release (which I assume is the same as the Fox release unless/until someone confirms otherwise).

And every time I see those screen caps, I still can't believe that someone here said that there isn't much of a difference between the DVD and the blu ray.

Is the JP release obtainable? I have been on the look out, but so far no luck.

Fair enough, but what's different about it? Just the range? Frankly Mann has been pretty consistent with the "low dialogue, loud action" mix style (at least on DVD/Blu). My only reservation would be if that's not the way it was originally mixed theatrically, then that should be preserved, but I have no idea how Heat looked/sounded in theaters.

It's obtainable but expensive. The lowest used prices on amazon.co.jp from private sellers are $70.

It just pops more.. It sounds less frustrating because the differences between dialogue and gun shots isn't as extreme. The overall experience is much greater during the big shootout scene in particular. Everyone I remember who also got the Japanese version and talked about their impressions prefers it to the Warner.

Does the Japan release contain the Michael Mann audio changes found in the current U.S. release:

"Ferocious, aren't I?
"You sift through the detritus..."

I'd like to see these return, at least the Pacino line anyway.

Interesting, hopefully that's the mix on the next release. That way both options are available Stateside at a decent price. Not gonna spend more than $20 for a new mix.

Yes, but it isn't the original mix. It was that way in the theater, it was that way on the Dolby Digital LaserDisc.

Sounds like they added dynamic compression to the Japanese release.

Sorry if this is completely obvious, but what upcoming release? I was under the impression that the one that just came out was identical to the old one. Is there another one coming eventually?

No confirmation of a release date, but it does sound like one is in the pipeline.

It almost got me kicked out of my apartment in 1996. The drive-in scene. I had the windows open and forgot about that sequence. People thought there was gunfire in the complex.

Is the 20th Century Fox Blu ray the same as the WB one?
