The lead actress was absolutely amazing in this. It was a very well-done movie, but it did feel REALLY long to me for some reason, and while I really appreciate the movie a lot, it doesn't strike me as something I'll want to rewatch anytime soon. |

God, this movie just draaaaaaaaags right up until the present day stuff and by that point I'm already bored. Damn, I always forget how annoying Laurie is in this one. It's not bad, it just pisses me off that it has the name Halloween slapped across it. Halloween (1978) oozes classy, even for a Horror but this just reeks of white trash in comparison. Shame 'cos there's a good slasher in there somewhere. |

![]() abby's halloween-a-thon... of HORROR! I has bags of candy corn [Show spoiler] ![]() 4. Dolly Dearest (1991) - ![]() I watched this about 6 years ago and remembered it being so bad. I remembered faint details, but I couldn't remember if it was so-bad-it's-funny or not. Well, upon rewatching it, it's just so-bad. It rips off scenes from The Omen and Child's Play, while also being a snoozefest for the first 70 minutes. Finally, when Dolly starts talking (which is hilarious and reminded me of Louise Belcher from Bob's Burgers) it gets more entertaining. And the ending is one of the most anticlimactic, and baffling endings I've ever seen. Dramatic, intense music signaling one last scare and... cut to black? What? The cover art is the only good thing about this movie. ![]() 5. Sinister (2012) - ![]() ![]() I heard some mixed, though mostly positive things about this movie. It looked and sounded like a decent supernatural horror movie. And Ethan Hawke being in the movie made me even more curious. However, it was just like any modern ghost movie. Tons of jump scares. What I found most baffling was the way the plot was structured. Most scary movies have a slow build of discovery. In this, he finds the videos first that depict the murders and show the monster, and only later does he find the kids' drawings? Shouldn't that be the other way around where the drawings hint towards something more sinister( ![]() |

10/2 - *The Brides of Dracula (1960) - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My first Hammer film of the month with many more to come. It started promising enough, the first half hour was good. Then Van Helsing shows up and I thought "Hell yeah, it's going to be amazing now!" Sadly that wasn't the case. It was just kind of average, and it wasn't nearly as good as Horror of Dracula. The vampire villain of the piece, I forgot his name, pales in comparison to Christopher Lee and hurts the film. 10/2 - *The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973) - ![]() ![]() I watched the Elvira's Movie Macabre version of the film, full disclosure. Where do I begin with this one? It felt like Hammer bought the rights to a film where a cop investigates a satanic cult, then at the last minute rewrote it to include vampires. And then at the last second rewrote it again to include Dracula. It's just all over the place. It upsets me that Christopher Lee turned down The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires, which is a really fun film, but agreed to be in this dreck. 2015 So Far: [Show spoiler]

It felt pretty juvenile to me. I appreciated a lot of the homage to other horror movies, but it just wasn't that suspenseful to me, and I didn't identify with the relationship between the brothers, or the concept behind their fears. Although I admit I was never bored while watching, and the final scenario was pretty cool with a really awesome set. Last edited by callahan09; 10-02-2015 at 05:01 PM. |

I've documented my horror viewing regimen for the last few years on my bl-g. I've got the 2015 post up and running. I'm hopeful I can top last year's total.

![]() ![]() 4. ALIEN 3 ![]() ![]() ![]() I hadn't seen this in a while and I've become a fan of Charles Dance who has a pretty big role so I gave it another try. It's a pretty decent movie but the major thing going against it is that you cant help but compare it to the first two. Its definitely worth seeing, it just isn't as scary as the first or as action packed as the second and leaves me wishing I had watched one of those instead. 1. HALLOWEEN 3 2. THE CABIN IN THE WOODS 3. 28 DAYS LATER |

I've noticed that a lot of people have watched Trick r' Treat this year and have given it good reviews. I've never seen it; it was on the to-do list for a while but I never got around to it. Maybe I should give it a go.
----- * - First time viewing 10/2 - *The Kiss of the Vampire (1963) - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't know what it is about these Hammer vampire films that I'm picking today but I just can't connect with them. To be honest I had every intention of giving this film 2 and a half stars, but I thought the ending was really satisfying and fun; the professor uses black magic to summon a horde of bats to kill all the vampires. It was a great way to dispatch all of the bad guys. It doesn't matter that it doesn't make much sense or that all of the bats were clearly phony looking rubber puppets on strings, that just made it more fun. So I bumped it up half a skull. 2015 So Far: [Show spoiler]

![]() [Show spoiler] (2) A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) (Streaming) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I think this movie does a very good job of capturing the feeling and effects of being lonely. It may be "slow" by western standards but I think the combination of the black and white was what helps make the story telling work so effectively. Plus. there's some great camera shots/scenes. |

Last night to kick off the 31 days of Horror I watched It Follows.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My wife and I felt it was a pretty solid horror film and everyone who says the director "broke his own rules" is full of s*** as far as I'm concerned. At first I thought that flaw went over my head because I couldn't find much wrong with the film. My wife says maybe it was the scene where It is standing on the roof of the house. I asked some people online and apparently that is the scene people were complaining about. [Show spoiler]

31/09 - The Falling (2015, dir. Carol Morley)
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Very ambiguous and slightly over ambitious story following an English all girls school in the 1960's which suffers from strange ritualistic otherworldly events after the death of one of it's students, which could be caused by witchcraft, mental illness, mob mentality, lead poisoning. Tackling many subject matters like the shifting attitudes sexuality matched with the hormonal changes, along with dark secrets left to be unveiled and a few nods to stuff like Don't Look Now or Picnic at Hanging Rock, the whole things keeps cemented by a very basic and emotional core between two friends. The resolution may not satisfy those who look for answers or prefer their films more mysterious in ways, but it kept me watching and a few bizarre subliminal scenes chilled me. 02/10 - The Silence of the Lambs (1991, dir, Jonathan Demme) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Anthony Hopkins always surprises me in this role, despite the acclaim, you see so much intensity in the way he looks in to the screen yet he plays it all of as being so natural. He just feels like an immediate threat, not just to send shivers down your spine, but like he's genuinely ready to attack you and dissect you. For all intent and purposes it would be a hammy performance if done in correctly because the character is so evil it's hard to gets depth out of him, but Hopkins pulls it off and Demme is a really superb director here as he's camerawork really utilises the medium of film to simply get you uncomfortable close to people's faces. Very efficient but effective work. I never quite feel the mystery and the Hannibal Lecter storyline quite marry up together, it always sat a bit odd with me, but it's still a phenomenal film. ![]() |

I love the morgue scenes between the stories, I love all 3 stories, and really I just love everything about it. The acting is top notch across the board, as is the special effects & makeup work. Direction is spot-on, great music, great photography, great stories. The Gas Station is very suspenseful and scary, and the other two are quirky and crazy and just awesome. I feel like this is criminally underrated. |

This is a decent little film, but ultimately forgettable. There are some funny scenes though the execution is neither bad nor good but somewhere in the middle of the two. I can see others getting more of a kick out of this than I did. Good palette cleanser. |
