Got my Snake of June disc today.
I was just about to start watching the film but I got a little distracted by the transfer. There are visible white lines during every cut in the film, so far.
I have never seen the film before so I don't know if it is always supposed to be that way, or if they forgot to zoom into the picture for the transfer?

I just send them a message to clear it up.

Quote:
Hello Third Window Team. I noticed that during the movie, every cut has some white flicker to it. Like, you see the cut lines on the negative film on the top and bottom of the picture with every cut in the film. I am unsure if that was one of Tsukamotos odd stylistic choices, or if the image was supposed to be zoomed in a bit (the editing lines appear at the bottom of every last frame, and the top of every new frame in a cut)
It looks like this every time a cut is in the film: (just quick pictures I took off of my TV)

Can anybody that has seen the film before, confirm that it is supposed to be that way?
Guess I have to get used to it then...

I don't think Arrow will be able to clear this one up... this is a Third Window Films release.

I know, I just realized that I mixed up my favorite UK Labels. Already fixed the error

I finished watching the film and the issue continues all the way through.
I can't help but feel that something went wrong, I can't imagine that this is intentional.
We all know how many cuts there are in a Tsukamoto film, and to have a white line flicker at the top and bottom of every cut, just seems wrong.

In every last frame before a cut, there is a small black bar and white line at bottom of the screen.
In every first frame after a cut = white line on top of the screen.

They all last for one frame and appear as a white flicker when you watch the film in motion. Happens during every single cut in the film.

I noticed this on the old DVD. It must just be how the film was edited.

yes I assume it's meant to be there as it has been on ALL previous releases of the film before. I think it has to do with the fact that it was shot on 16mm and blown up to 35mm and the 35mm film tinted in the process, and our release is from the 35mm print so thats the only version. Maybe the black and white version wouldnt have that problem, but then again it would be the black and white version. Considering it was Shinya Tsukamoto himself who did this transfer then I assume he didnt want to fix anything

Well, if that's how Tsukamoto wants it, then I take it that way. I find it to be an odd and distracting choice, but that's just my opinion, so who cares
Still very happy with the set and with the slipcase it looks great next to the other Third Windows Tsukamotos.
Can't wait for your guys to release the other ones as well.

@thirdwindowfilms:

Will you include the 90 minutes 'Jam Session' making of on the Kikujiro blu-ray?

NOTE

I received a screener last night and viewed the film. I don't have a market version of this release yet, so I don't know if what I will describe below is also present on all final versions (but I see that someone else above has noticed this as well):

Either I have a defective screener or there is a mastering error that has been replicated on all market versions. There are very distracting jumps that occur on the bottom end of the frame during various transitions (camera cuts). I can't possibly imagine that this is how the film was shot or was intended to be seen. (If the intent was to have the cuts during every frame cut, then they would be all over the film. The cuts appear to be quite random).

So, it is either my screener or there is a mastering error.

Our review will be up later tonight.

My copy should be in hand tomorrow. Hopefully the jumps not too distracting, looking forward to the film anyhow.

Have not watched A Snake Of June yet, so take this with a grain of salt,
but from what is described here to me it sounds like that is the way the actual film was assembled; snips, glue, scratches, fixed errors, re-glued etc.
Only way to 'fix' this would be to re-assemble the film from the negatives.
It is what it is.
This ain't no modern Hollywood blockbuster.

explained above. this was all done by tsukamoto and considering its the same in the other releases I'd assume he has signed off on it. I assume that considering the film was shot on 16mm and then blown up to 35mm and tinted that the original 35mm has these splices and he used the original 35mm to make this transfer (if he used the original 16mm negatives then the film would be in black and white).

I didn't remember seeing this on my japanese DVD, so I got it out of the garbage bag and checked it. Indeed it isn't on there, since it is slightly cropped, so the line flickers aren't visible. Usually not a fan of cropped releases, but in this instance I would have preferred it.

Blu-ray capture (tv photo).

Couldn't get the matching blu-ray snapshot, but the flickering lines are immediately below lips in the picture (29 seconds into the movie)

Interesting. Thanks for posting this kuroshi.
I guess in this case I would have preferred some cropping as well, as it is not nearly as intrusive as the constant flicker.

I have to say I didn't really notice it. Well it didn't bother me anyway on a first watch of the film, was too engrossed in the kinetic cinematography and dark narrative. If anyone hasn't seen it and the issue raised is causing some hesitation, I recommend you go ahead and buy, it's top tier Tsuakomoto.

If anyone's bothered by this, you can try turning on Overscan on your TV (or turning 1:1 pixel mapping modes off e.g. 'Just Scan' etc.)
