I really enjoyed An unexpected journey in its extended version. I felt that the extended scenes really helped lighten the tone of the movie and funnily enough helped the pacing. i particularly enjoyed the great goblin singing down in goblin town.

Smaug is another story for me. I believe it is the weakest of the three movies as it is mostly filler. The beginning is absolutely great. The mirkwood scenes have been improved significantly in the extended cut, but once the movie hits laketown, it really loses its way. Thank goodness for the excellent bilbo/smaug confrontation that really wakes the movie up, and the scenes with thrain/gandalf are interesting and cut well with the approach to erebor. i still have issues with the foundry dragon action scene, but overall i found the extended edition to be better than the theatrical. There are still issues with the movie as a whole, especially the addition of the politics of laketown, however the extended cut is worthwhile.
+1 to everything quoted above

Battle of the Five Armies is my favorite of the bunch. Not sure why all the bad reviews. It sends off the trilogy in grand fashion and makes up for a lot of the bungles in DoS (the whole lighting of the forges and golden dwarf statue is the stupidest sequence in all of Jackson's Middle Earth). It also ties in LotR trilogy nicely.

Can't wait to get the whole Hobbit extended trilogy in HFR 4K 3D Blu-ray!

I thought it was the best too, in fact I think it made the first two better.

I don't understand why they just didn't use it in the Scouring, instead of moving it to The Two Towers.
You don't understand why they didn't add another storyline and climactic confrontation on top of the fifty endings everyone was already complaining about? Really?

The people complaining about no Scouring of the Shire are the same people complaining that The Hobbit was made into 3 films.

You can't win.

Not only is that not true, it's a cheap shot, Homer. The Scouring of the Shire could've been handled in a 5-or-so minute "afterword" and all of the added "creative" extras bloated the whole deal a lot more than that. Furthermore, a happy "wrap up" ending wouldn't have hurt the big battle ending any more than it did in the book - not if it was well-written. Really, guys, you have to live with the fact that some people have different ideas. It's no big deal - you have a right to yours and vice-versa. That's why it's a movie discussion site - or at least it's supposed to be.

Anyone think there will be a 3D Hobbit EE trilogy released with even more content?

Anyone think there will be a LOTR EE re-release with the bonus content on Blu-rays for less discs?

I will never understand why people complain about the scouring of the shire since its in the goddamn movie. In Fellowship, when Frodo looks in the mirror of Galadriel, he sees the scouring of the shire. People who complain about it not being in the movie, I guess have never seen the movies. And to people who say that isn't the scouring, listen to the commentary where Jackson says that is what they are showing.

It may be Scouring-esque, but it's orcs instead of human "ruffians".

not only that it doesn't show them coming back and battling it out in the shire, throwing out Wormtongue etc.. THAT'S what most people mean when they say "scouring of the shire"

Well then shouldn't that question have been asked in the Battle of the Five Armies thread?

Wormtongue ate Lotho Sackville-Baggins... that's the scene I wanted to see.

No proof. Pure speculation expressed by Saruman.

From the text itself:
Quote:
But did I hear someone ask where poor Lotho is hiding? You know, don’t you, Worm? Will you tell them?”

Wormtongue cowered down and whimpered: “No, no!”

“Then I will, said Saruman. "Worm killed your Chief, poor little fellow, your nice little Boss. Didn’t you, Worm? Stabbed him in his sleep, I believe. Buried, him, I hope; though Worm has been very hungry lately. No, Worm is not really nice. You had better leave him to me.”

A look of wild hatred came into Wormtongue’s red eyes. “You told me to; you made me do it,” he hissed.

I have a question regarding watching this movie in HFR 3D on home cinema projector. My projector is Optoma HD25 and I believe it is projecting at 1080p 24fps. Will I get the benefit of the HFR watching on this projector. Do I have to change any settings? My player is OPPO BDP-103. Thanks.
