Not sure about FYEO, certainly it is at times but for the most part it is standard Bond formula (starting off with that ridiculous pre-title sequence). LTK is a revenge movie more than a spy flick; a top 5 Bond for me, but there isn't much spying, just Bond on Fire.

Did someone say Licence To Kill? One of my personal favorites! The movie almost seems like it could've come out of the Cannon film library. Great villains (Davi and Del Toro> honeymooooon.....) some nasty violence, and one of the hottest Bond girls, IMO....Carey Lowell.

Craig's movies haven't gotten as silly as the silliest parts of Licence to Kill but LTK is still better than them. And I say that as someone who likes it but still finds it overrated.

Disappointing to find out that Craig gives the same performance he always does. Actors are supposed to surprise us with their portrayals of James Bond. |

I agree that with all the irritating silliness and slovenly filmmaking -- it's not well-made under John Glen's direction -- Licence to Kill is still better than the Craig films. There was an outstanding script at the core of Licence to Kill before Michael G. Wilson got his sticky fingers into it. But there is no attempt to deconstruct or humiliate the character, no editorializing. I also agree with the remark above comparing Licence to Kill to a Cannon film which was a B movie company. Although I get a kick out of a number of Cannon films, the comparison is not a compliment. Last edited by Richard--W; 10-25-2015 at 06:04 PM. |

From Russia With Love is a cold war spy film, but so is The Living Daylights. YOLT is silly all the way through. The should have thrown out that script and started over again. At least it's elegantly made with exciting action and has the advantage of Connery's Bond. For Your Eyes Only and Licence to Kill had serious in-the-Fleming-groove scripts by Richard Maibaum which were dumbed down and screwed up by Michael G. Wilson. Of the two, I would say that For Your Eyes Only had, at the outset, a brilliant script. You'll note that Roger Moore takes himself more seriously in this one, deny it though he may on the commentary. I really enjoy his performance. It's the first time the audience is made to feel that he is at risk. The prime minister gag at the end and the hokey pre-title sequence were not part of it, originally. The original opening was the sinking of the trawler and the attack on the yacht. Then push into Melina's eyes to start the opening titles and the title song. The underlying idea that Bond was spooked as events began to remind him of his past and afraid that he might be digging two graves -- one for himself and one for his opposition -- was not so much abandoned as not perceived by the idiot director who failed to emphasize it. If it hadn't been for Wilson's interference and John Glen's plodding direction, For Your Eyes Only and Licence to Kill might have been two of the strongest and most memorable entries in the franchise. Still, with all the flaws considered, they've got better material to build on than any of the Craig films. Last edited by Richard--W; 10-25-2015 at 06:55 PM. |

Is LTK generally well-regarded? If anything I've always found it underrated, with Living Daylights inexplicably getting most of the praise when it comes to Dalton's run.

I prefer Living Daylights, because it feels more like a Bond movie and has a strong romance element, but LTK is very good too. I wish Dalton did more Bonds. They're so different from Moore and Brosnan, and have that fun 80's feel.

Daylights is a good bridge to the Fleming Bond darkness that kill introduced. And so good Nolan (spits) ripped it off And now I am watching it! Last edited by dvdmike; 10-25-2015 at 07:56 PM. |
