I wouldn't hold my breath for an extended version. Disney doesn't seem to do that for their big franchises; Avengers: Age of Ultron didn't get one either. It would be hard for them to do one when they're trying to create one cohesive universe for their to be multiple versions of the storyline floating around that could potentially contradict other films or media.

Unless we hear some kind of announcement from Disney, don't expect the blu to use either. They don't seem to be interested in those codecs yet, like the way Warner Bros or Lionsgate are.

It ultimately will, just a question of when. No one is promoting 4K BD yet. If UHD BD is a real thing (in stores and all that) by the time this ships, you can better believe there will be a 4K release.

I've seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens twice, and I plan to see it a third time. I'm going to space out the third viewing, though, and wait a few weeks.
It goes without saying that the Blu-ray will be mine. I have a 4K television, so, if this movie comes available in a 4K UHD Blu-ray/standard Blu-ray combo set, then that will be mine. |

Even if the format is fully installed in Best Buys by then that doesn't mean Disney will be on-board yet. For example, Phantom Menace took an extra year or two to come to DVD, even though DVD was around when it came out on VHS. It's all about having the market saturation to make it worthwhile, and making sure the format survives before investing. Even the launch studios and releases are underwhelming, for that reason.

I just read that Disney has the rights for Episode VII onwards. Does this mean that Fox still owns Episodes 1 - 6? And does that mean that because 2 studios now own rights to different movies, we will never get them all in the same boxset?

I think they'll make a licensing deal for that at one point. Disney owns rights for all of them but 4 btw.

Well, it seems that there's definitely plans for films continuing the timeline beyond Episode IX, although we'll have to see what happens. And then you have the Star Wars anthology films (Rogue One, etc.) taking place in various points of the Star Wars timeline, so it's hard to tell if they would be part of a box set. |
