Hilarious. Thankfully, I don't get the channel.

"In a huge blow to backers of HD-DVD, video rental store Blockbuster announced today it will stock Blu-Ray disc exclusively in the majority of its locations.

Blockbuster president Matthew Smith told the Associated Press that the decision to go with Blu-ray was because that's what the people wanted: Overwhelming customer preference for Blu-Ray titles in the test markets, accounting for over 70% of all HD discs rented.

The Blu-ray blitz is expected in mid-July, and will feature 170 titles to be distributed at 1,700 Blockbuster locations.

“We intend to meet the demands of our customers and based on the trends we’re seeing, we’re expanding our Blu-ray inventory to ensure our stories reflect the right level of products,” Blockbuster executive, Matthew Smith, said.

Sony's strategy for winning this battle was to court film company's and thus get the jump on its competition, the reasoning being that people want to watch particular movies as opposed to formats.

Is this the death rattle of HD-DVD...or does an outdated business model like Blockbuster not even matter when online retailers like Netflix (and Blockbuster's own web model) will likely offer both choices?"
