From my understanding, the UHD Alliance have a Press Conference on Monday and more solid news may come from this

Oh, ok. I knew of the UHDA Presser, but I figured if we got any news on release windows it would come from publishers like Fox and I only saw major electronics companies on the lists. And from all the previews I've come across from companies that may produce players, like SONY and Sammy, no one's mentioned 4k players, just TV's and other tech.

Here's to hoping.

It's almost time for CES. Next year's models of plain ol' Blu-ray are just around the corner. Current models are priced to sell.

I doubt that UHD will be a big enough deal THIS year to drive down prices. Maybe next year.

True, notified membership on 12/3/2015 But in the meantime don’t you just love the speculative opinion leading up to the event.

I certainly thrive on it.

It's not like they can just rescan the film since it was done digitally. Does it get re-rendered or just upscaled? I doubt the latter given how phenomenal the film looked when it came to Blu in 2010.

What are the chances that the Monday meeting will be the full reveal? Given that it's the UHD Alliance I can see nothing more than a logo to look out for coming out of it and any last minute specification changes. What do you think we will see if anything? would a logo such as the Full HD 1080p logo come from the alliance or would that be the UHD Forum or is it even some other governing body?

The original Toy Story was not rendered in SD. It was rendered less than 1080p yes but it was above 720p. So far Pixar has not rendered anything in 4k yet despite budgets close to 200 million dollars

I think monday will be more about the finalized specs for uhd/hdr.

the big pressers are tuesday, we're more likely to get release dates during each brands presser that is releasing a UHD player. I just hope they dont give us the "were releasing soon" or "1st quarter" crap. I WANT DATES.

Robert, you should catch the UHD Alliance Presser, if you can.

"We'll find out more about the specific details at CES, but it appears that there will be two levels of HDR performance, including one for "premium" UHD TVs that are able to meet higher minimum quality specifications. One of the sticking points, we've heard, has been the issue of peak brightness, since OLED TVs don't get quite as bright as LED-backlit LCD sets. However, they are capable of much deeper blacks and therefore high dynamic range. We think that there will be a separate, slightly lower brightness requirement for OLED TVs."

Something else to confuse consumers. Bunch of nerds running things.

Hopefully SONY announces a new PS4 SKU that can do 4K video playback. I don't really have space in my setup for a standalone player.

The PS4 is already set up to do 4K video. Maybe we will hear more news at CES about this. Awhile back I posted a link to a video from Shuhei Yoshida, he mentioned that the PS4 is all set for 4K video. I'll see if I can find it again and post it.

This. Either way it'll need at least an update to enable 4K output for the discs/videos as right now it caps HDMI output to 1080.

My hype right now is insane for this week!

Ray (from Irvine) I think you’re continuing to place too much emphasis in the forthcoming ratings categories and specs as a set-in-stone indicator of performance.

Watch, with your own eyes, the HDR delivered content on TVs in a good controlled environment (compatible with your personal viewing environment) when they come available to your neck of the woods. More nits won’t necessarily guarantee better (performance) HDR picture quality, be it one LCD vs. another or one LCD vs. OLED of a given movie. It certainly helps but there are more factors involved into producing the final HDR image on the respective brand’s (and model) screen.

I plan to rely on the UHD Alliance Certification/Logo for my UHD upgrade purchase decisions. Any player/display without UHD Alliance Certification will be eliminated from consideration. In addition, any CE manufacturer or Content Creator/Provider that enters into an exclusive arrangement will be eliminated from consideration. Currently on my Black List is Vizio/VUDU and Samsung/M-GO.

If I see any exclusive bundles of UHD BR players/UHD Discs, I will ignore them until the exclusive ends. That Panasonic/Avatar 3D exclusive back in 2012 was the last straw, as far as I’m concerned.

At this point, I think I will be waiting until mid year 2017 before I actually begin upgrading my HT to UHD.
