Witch Who Came from the Sea is well-described by that Stephen Thrower excerpt I posted on the second or third page of this thread. It's got a hazy, weird feeling to it and definitely isn't for everyone. It is not comparable to Carnival of Souls or Messiah of Evil in any way other than being an American low budget, arty horror film. :P
That's why I wrote what I did about the other two, I havent seen them nor do I think Id be interested, simple as that ! Thanks !

Those of you who use Amazon regularly, a question...

I have AHP Vol.1 preordered with amazon. Its currently $79.99. I can order it from Diabolikdvd for $69.24 including shipping. Is it likely that amazon will drop again before release, or should I give Diabolik a try?

Also - does Diabolik charge on ordering, or when it ships? I can't find this info on their site.

Thanks for your help!

Diabolik charges on ordering. I would recommend them, as with the last several Arrow releases they started shipping them over a week before Amazon did.

When I was browsing Arrow titles on Family Video last night, I saw they have it for $60.99. Shipping is another $1.99.

I don't expect Amazon's price to drop any further during preorder unless Best Buy drops their price.

Family Video often has great prices, but be prepared to wait on their shipping. The last time I preordered from them, they didn't ship the item until close to a month after release date. I actually had to contact them to verify why they had even sent the order, as I had already cancelled the order with them about a week before they had shipped it.

For those who are unsure if this set might be for them or not; if you have Amazon prime, Arrow has The Witch Who Came from the Sea free on Amazon's streaming platform.

This set looks dodgy imo.

Just received the American Horror Project: Volume One box set.

An early contender for the release of the year in my opinion. The packaging/presentation is exceptional and I never thought we'd ever see these films released with such love and care. This is exactly the kind of horror films I personally love, offbeat and strange with some artistic merit in spite of their flaws.

I hope we get many volumes of this series, with Thrower's curation/involvement.

Just out of interest, what looks dodgy about it to you? It is an incredible release, that I'm sure fans of this kind of cinema will be raving about.

I'm on the fence for this set as I have my eyes on some LEs. 3 titles for around $23, however ($27 per title via Amazon).

Anyone have pics of the packaging/presentation, that would be great.

I am surprised that Vol. 1 wouldn't have at least one major film to pull up the other two films. Or having a popular volume to start the set. You don't start a collecting volume series with titles that might not be worth the packaging they are in.

I have never been charged by Diabolik until my order actually ships. I use a credit card. I think they may charge when you order, if you use PayPal.

How does this look to you? Pictures don't really do it justice, it is a beautiful set.

The great thing about this set (and the point of it) is that these are overlooked, 'minor' horror films that never really got the attention they deserved.

That's not really what these volumes are about. It's actually the opposite. This is specifically about showcasing the lesser known gems. This is in the same vein as Stephen Thrower's excellent Nightmare USA book. It focuses on American independent, exploitation, and regional films that don't get the same respect as some of their contemporaries.

Sets like this are why I collect movies in the first place. The fact that some of these forgotten or disregarded films are being restored with the same love that goes into more "respectable" fare is extremely satisfying.

These movies aren't for everyone, but for fans of the type, this set is very exciting.

This has been covered before. Rather than undertake the time, effort, and thought required to do actual reading and research, he simply took two seconds to click on each film's IMDB rating and immediately assumed that this small sampling of arbitrarily assigned ratings from a handful of random and unknown people was the final and undisputed word on the artistic validity of the films in question.

I'm not a regular poster here but I have to say this is probably the release of the year for me. I am a big admirer of The Witch Who Came From The Sea and have wanted to see The Premonition and Carnival Of Blood for several years so this set is perfect for me. Arrow's reliant quality presentation and packaging should make this a must buy for fans of 70's drive-in cinema. I'd love to see Arrow get The Candy Snatchers for Vol. 2.

I don't think so. Don't make stuff up or make generalizations about posters (people) you know nothing about; it's pathetic.

I posted that Witch is available for free on Amazon streaming....because I watched it recently to get a sense of what kind of films are going to be included in the set. I thought it was terrible. As for your imdb comment; I did notice that the director's other credits mostly consist of directing pornos under a pseudonym. (Which I think is pretty dodgy)

Even the most charitable of horror fan blogs make The Premonition sound middling at best; poor at worst.

Carnival of Blood actually looks like the most interesting of the three. Using the term Lynchian is a bit of a cliche but it does seem to have a "David Lynch" vibe crossed with the junkyard pop-art aesthetic of a director like Benh Zeitlin.

For me the set will be a pass unless there's a really good sale.

Even if I don't end up liking every film in this set, this is exactly the kind of release I want to encourage and support, so I pre-ordered.

Since I'm on a tight budget, I had to choose between this and Arrow's now-OOP Battles Without Honor and Humanity set and I didn't hesitate. Although I'm sure those are great films, the idea behind the American Horror Project speaks to me more deeply. I've been a lifelong horror fan (I was a horror fan before I was a cinephile), devouring not only the acknowledged classics but also always seeking out the obscure hidden gems (The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: Horror certainly helped!). The idea of a Blu-ray series spotlighting hidden gems from the fringes of American horror excites the hell out of me.

I seriously need to pick up Stephen Thrower's Nightmare USA when I have some extra cash. I already have Kim Newman's Nightmare Movies, which is one of my all-time favorite film books -- along with The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: Horror.

So, yeah, I can't wait to get my hands on this set and I'm eager to see what's in store for Vol. 2!

You have on multiple occasions summarily dismissed films announced by or rumored for Arrow by simply quoting their IMDB ratings. Don't make generalizations about films you know nothing about; it's pathetic.

You sure got me. I look at imdb and read the user reviews among other sources to try and gauge the quality of movies that I might blind buy! (You know like just about everyone else here)

Stop trolling me. If you don't like me; keep it to yourself. If I made a post you don't agree with then send a PM to one of the moderators of this forum. I have no interest in talking to you and consider this bickering to be finished.

Stick to talking about Arrow.
