I don't think the remake's BETTER than the original, but it's certainly enjoyable, and I like the more butchy Barbra. The soundtrack is nice, it's shot nice, the zombie effects are terrific, and it's different enough from the original to stand out on it's own. Plus some stuff just makes more sense in the revised story (small things, like Barbra's car rolling down the hill instead of her just randomly crashing into a tree).
What the remake doesn't have is the raw gritty feel of the original, and it feels almost too polished and cinematic. The way the original film was shot almost makes it feel like we're witnessing something that actually happened in 1968, and it was filmed with someone's home movie camera. It was unintentional, but I think it works in the film's favor, and makes it stand out more. Plus the scene of the zombie's eating Tom and Judy's organs gets me every time. I cringe more watching the original (and in a good way), and is one of the very few horror films that's actually somewhat uncomfortable for me to watch. |

Also, I think the 1968 film had the better, more powerful ending. The 1990 film's ending worked for it's film, but it was a bit predictable in comparison. Also, the 1968 film had more clear messages and themes that fit the Vietnam era well (some of which were possibly unintentional). The more traumatized Barbra didn't bother me too much, and I think Judith O'Dea gave a pretty good performance, but I thought it was odd the film built her up to be the main character before she's kinda brushed aside. It did make the cast look more like an ensemble though. I liked seeing the departure in the remake, with Barbra clearly the main character, and giving the movie a slightly different perspective. I think they also improved Judy (or "Judy-Rose", lol what a redneck name!) a lot, giving her more to do, and making her feel like a more important part of the story. In the original, she didn't have a lot to do, and once I learned she was only in the film at all to give Judith Ridley a part, it became obvious. She gave Tom some character development, but she acted like a total airhead, going with him in the truck for no reason, and being the cause of his death. In the remake, at least they let her drive the damn thing, and their death was more Tom's own fault than anyone's. Still, I do wonder how the original film would've been like with Judith Ridley as a more empowered Barbra, as originally scripted. She apparently auditioned for that part at one point. |

I created an Excel spreadsheet documenting region coding, English subs, and resolution on 79 Umbrella releases.
Umbrella releases.jpg I thought Umbrella's website would show me all of their releases if I clicked Movies>All>Blu-ray, but for whatever reason it only gave me a list of 79 titles. As a result there are some notable absences in this sheet (Ex: Night 68, Dawn, and Day of the (living) dead, and Buddy Holly Story), but regardless I figure this sample size is big enough to where we can at least see some pattern starting to form. Bigger image under spoiler [Show spoiler] By my count it's: 29 1080p region free, 5 1080/50i region free, and 45 locked. SO! With all that babble out of the way, I'd say our chances of "Night of the Living Dead" 1990 being region free are about 1 in 3. |

I've always felt that Judith O'dea got a bit of a raw deal; she has a reputation as being a weak element in the original NOTLD, but I think she gives a remarkably effective performance of a person who's just been through too damned much to be able to process it all. It's a nice complement to Dwayne Jones's purposeful brusqueness and the impotent blathering of Cooper.
I'm hardly the first person to point this out, but there's a moment when she's sitting staring off into space and listening to the radio reports when the announcer first notifies listeners that "the killers...are...eating the flesh" and you can see her realize what's happened to Johnny. It's all going on behind her eyes, and it's really chilling. And that little moment when she happily notes, "It's hot in here!" as if she's grateful for any excuse to talk about normal things, and to avoid finishing her story about the cemetery. There are a lot of little touches in her performance that I think are great. Nothing against Tallman; I just think Original Barbara brings more to the table than "oh look it's another helpless woman stereotype". And I'd say her catatonia is wholly appropriate -- for man or woman -- under the circumstances. |

I can understand people not liking the retimed blu-ish color, but personally I'm going to keep the bluish one in addition to buying the original color version if ever released region free. I think both color timings are cool.

It's a re-issue of the OOP Umbrella release, so it's 4:3.
