Default PS3 question Needs answer

Um just a question I don't know that much about PS3's. SO I'm going to rely on you other fine people. I know PS3 come wiht a harddrive, ANd I thiink I know that they rely on a chip for the firmware deal. Here's my question, do you have to have the hardrive for the firmware updates and to play bluray's. Period.

You can also use USB flash drives and download from the web if you so choose.

Not sure how you'd end up with a hard-drive-less PS3 though.

what?....yes hard drive is needed for firm ware updates and to play blu rays. The blu-ray drive is too slow to stream stuff off it like a normal DVD more so if say the texture it is trying to load is 50mb+
so it needs to install stuff onto the hard drive to make load times faster. Without a hard drive you could be waiting hours for a game to load

That info is true. The firmware does not reside in the HDD. The firmware is flashed into EPROM of the PS3. So if you change your HDD, the last firmware you updated with would still be there.

HOWEVER, it doesn't mean that the PS3 will run without a HDD. It simply won't do it. The HDD is needed to unpack the PUP file the firmware comes in before it can be flashed into the EPROM. For BD playback, the HDD is needed to store timecode for resume play, bookmarks, as well as BD-Live data.
