Yep. Even though people may scoff at how they congratulate themselves on "improving" Tolkien, it's the thought process behind those decisions which fascinates me about those commentaries.

They're not altogether enthused by Saruman's death, for example, even though it's been reinstated into the EE. It's because of how it was intended to end film 2 and not start film 3, that there isn't enough dramatic impetus to the scene which is why it was removed entirely from the theatrical editions. Although they added a slightly different angle to it in the reshoots ("so you have come for information", i.e. there's something that they now want from Saruman) it wasn't enough to rescue the scene in their eyes and they say as much on the commentary. IIRC Jackson says that the scene impinges so little on the story to come that they wouldn't have even had them return to Isengard, if it wasn't for having to pick up Merry and Pippin and find the Palantir.

It's insight like that into the story - for better or worse - that I treasure about the LOTR/Hobbit commentaries.

Yeah, I mean that whole time I was thinking "you guys way overthought it, the bad guy needs his comeuppance," but it's great hearing WHY they did what they did.

It's very easy to import Blurays from Amazon.co.jp. You just need a forwarding service. If you need help you can send me a PM, I buy a lot of stuff from Japan.

My assumption was always they left out Saruman/Mouth of Sauron so there'd be incentive for people to need the ROTK EE.

It's a failing of mine, I suppose, that it rankles me to listen to people who wrote dwarf-tossing jokes complain about Tolkien's work in literature. Kinda mind-boggling. Guess it's just me.

They even screw that up by Frodo showing the One Ring to a Nazgul in Osgiliath at the end of The Two Towers. Next thing you know in the story, we're told Sauron thinks Pippin has the Ring in Isengard. Durr...what? It was just painful. Decisions made for cheap audience manipulation.

Err...maybe the nazgul thought Frodo was just proposing to him? Yes, that's it.

Seriously though, I never even noticed that gaff before!

Anybody know how much those Japanese Lord of the Rings sets are? I might want to own them. They look sexy.

Large sets from JP are usually expensive. If it makes you feel any better they are the same discs worldwide.

I was tempted, but they just take up too much space. Decluttr gave me like $0.30 for each of them. Sucks, but hey.

The aftermarket prices for the Complete Recordings sets on eBay are heart attack-inducing. I suppose it's too much to hope that they'll get re-released for 15th anniversary?

My BD trilogy had one of the packages messed up a little bit. Got them for Christmas, so it was probably too long ago to have anything done about it. First world problems.

Marathoned the trilogy over the last three days (EEs), and oh boy, do they look and sound awesome. Been years since I watched these movies, and they hold up beautifully.

Thanks. I liked the box set, but not that much if they're expensive. I'm okay with my current LE set.

Could be that the lower priced version doesn't have DVD copies included. Either way the set has the same extras.

I would consider buying any movies you really like being released this year in the UHD Blu-ray/Blu-ray bundle pack. Since you're new to the format, it might be wise to be future ready for 4k right off the bat.

Then when you upgrade to a UHD display with HDR and a UHD player you are set.

Really? Is that just for the Canadian version? I bought mine (U.S.) a year ago, and it was the magnet case

Figures they would do something like that and not even black cases. There is French? on the case, maybe just for the Canadian version?
