Why are you taking screenshots using a camera instead of a HDMI capture card?

This is pointless and doesn't demonstate anything

Okay, you're the guy who knows how to do this. We've been looking for you on another thread.

Do this for us then, because I agree the whole camera thing is pointless.

Since the legality of the process in getting these screencaps is questionable they can't be discussed in public here.

Just did a quick search. It seems to me that the hdcp 2.2 copyright protection may block the screen shot attempt.

Doesn't that render this entire thread pointless?

1. Cellphone pic shots or hell, even DSLR camera shots dont tell a true story
2. We can't break "legally" HDCP 2.2 to take actual screenshots (even though that scorpionpail guy says he can, or knows how)

We can't really do any actual screenshot comparisons, then?

Way too many variables in trying to demonstrate anything with photos of a TV,
-room lighting
-TV
-type of camera
-camera settings
-camera lens
-settings on TV

We can't "legally" take BD screenshots either technically.
It's the process we can't talk about

Exactly, so in order to do it you have to use nefarious methods.

Yeah, it's the process in which you go about getting the shots is what the rules say is not allowed. Screenshots are fine as far as I'm aware. Specifically this rule
  • It is strictly prohibited to discuss websites, techniques, software and any and all methods that can be used to duplicate, acquire or otherwise access copyrighted and copy protected material except via approved methods by the copyright holders (Blu-ray, DVD, iTunes, digital on-disc copies etc). This includes any and all all variations of disc copying software, torrents and any and all technologies that are available or may become available in the future for these purposes. This also includes any other form of illegal or unethical behaviour for example the unauthorised reproduction of copyright material and trademarks. Any breach deemed serious enough will be forwarded to the relevant authorities.

Paypal me $400, I'll send you one.*

As soon as Amazon went from guaranteed day delivery to "we have no effin clue", I preordered from Robert of VE here. Then my missus bought me one from Best Buy last week, ordered it online.

Now they're gone. I think early March is now their general release.

We'll look for your screenshots then.

*In March

I dont know how they will make screenshot comparisons now (BD vs UHD) on sites like caps-a-holic. I saw "life of pi" 4K HDR demo on 4K HDR HDTV and it looked great, but on my PC monitor picture is washed out, and without contrast (picture looks even worse than BD). My quess is, that HDR content can be only displayed on HDR compatible HDTV.

PC software video decoders will be able to convert HDR->SDR on the fly. They could simply downconvert 10-bit to 8-bit color....

Yeah, when doing regular BD caps PCs remap the 16-235 image to 0-255 levels as a matter of course, so if we ever get to the stage of properly sourced UHD Blu caps then hopefully they'll be mapped across in a similar way (albeit at 10-bit not 8-bit). It won't be any good for determining what HDR adds, natch, but for things like analyzing spatial detail they'd still be useful.

Well then these screencaps could be quite misleading for the casual viewer, and hurt the format's success.

The casual viewer won't have a full spec HDR set

The resolution difference is pretty apparent when i flip back and forth.

But i think itll be a much bigger difference on the movies with true 4k DIs/better cameras used to film with.

Looking forward to seeing some of the sony and lionsgate movies.

Sorry not sorry for the un-professional camera quality

Uh...how many casual viewers look at screencaps though? My mates thought I was the king of the nerds (not an unfair assessment ) for being into this stuff, so normal people won't give a crap regardless.

For us nerds, proper caps of the UHD Blu discs presented with 'these are not intended to judge HDR' caveats would still be a useful resource for judging the impact of spatial resolution. Far more useful than someone taking pictures with a camera phone, anyway.
