It's of little consequence, since the French disc can easily be viewed with the menu, movie, and extras in English, but the French packaging and the French language digibook are slightly irksome in retrospect.

On the other hand, my Blu-ray collection does look somewhat more refined and worldly now.
I bought the French issue over the UK issue because of the packaging - or the cover design to be precise. I can read a bit of French, but not enough to do the digibook justice. I just wanted it as The Third Man is one of my favourite films. I still haven't gotten around to watching it to compare the PQ to the Criterion release - which looks fantastic anyway.

To any of our forum members who have not seen The Lion in Winter, trust me, this is a must see film. Peter O'Toole, Katherine Hepburn (she won Best Actress for her performance as Queen Eleanor), Nigel Terry, and both Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton in their film debuts.

It's probably been about ten years since I've last seen it, but I will be immediately adding this to my collection, region B locked or no.
I agree with everyone who has praised this film. I've seen it dozens of times over the years. The performances are uniformly flawless, and the script is chock full of quotable lines ... every character is given multiple opportunities to shine.

I think the artwork on the Studio Canal blu-ray is gorgeous. I hope it gets a US release on blu. In any case, I'll be holding on to my DVD because of the isolated soundtrack, which is an indispensable bonus.

What are the chances Criterion would do David Fincher's Sony movies:
Panic Room (the one with young Kristen Stewart), Social Network & Girl with Dragon Tattoo? Panic & Tattoo may be too mainstream but Social Network is a good candidate. Also, I really hope Criterion would re-release Seven. I used to own the Laserdisc version, and the transfer on that one is amazing, and the special features are just mind boggling.

It's only about $32 shipped from AmazonUK right now.

It's $37.57 which is more than I paid. I'm not going to bother with registration on the UK site if I can get an item cheaper through the US site.

You don't have to register for any other Amazon sites once you've registered for one. You can use your login details at any store. You don't even have to input your payment details again.

Your registration on the US site transfers to the UK site. I shop Amazon UK frequently and my account details are the same at both. Amazon makes things super convenient. I order a lot of music from the UK site that is cheaper from there than here in the US, even with shipping.

Also, like the US site, prices fluctuate. So does the exchange rate, but not as much as prices. I got my single disc version of the new transfer of The Third Man for about $23 in November last year. You don't pay VAT when importing, so that gets deducted from the price at checkout; however, the shipping costs essentially add that back.

I tend to wait to order until I have a batch of blu-rays and CDs to save on shipping. Shipping from the UK takes about 7 days.

Is Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf available on Blu anywhere? I've been itching to see it again, but have been waiting. It's one of those "I can't believe it's not available" titles.

That's not the price when you convert GBP to USD but maybe their calculator's broken... They add a .99 GBP per DVD and a 2.09 GBP shipping charge to the 23 GBP. That's 26.08 GBP total. (Priority is an extra 14.98 GBP.)

OK, I just tried it there and it lowers the BD price to 19.17 GBP after you try to check out... Now I get it. Sort of. Doesn't matter now.

For me it's not that packaging is more important than disc content.

But it is important.

If I'm lukewarm about buying a movie, but the packaging/cover art is awesome, that will occasionally persuade me to buy it.

Or if there are multiple versions/transfers available and the PQ difference is negligible, then I will pay a few dollars more to get the one with the superior packaging.

I don't think it's that weird.

But I like to wear jorts and T-shirts with wild animals on them in the summertime...so what do I know?

DVD is the only option at this point that I'm aware of.

...it's a disgrace.

Basically same with me although I only care about packaging and cover art if it looks good, if it doesn't, doesn't bother me. How the case looks though can get me to pay attention to a DVD/Blu-Ray I would of ignored otherwise when I'm walking around a store or browsing through Amazon.

Persuasion comes into play when I'm looking at two different copies of the same film but, extras are way more important to me. Extras justify making me spend $10 more for a Blu-Ray... Which is why I buy Criterions although they are usually a lot more expensive.

It's coming out soon in Germany:
http://www.amazon.de/Whos-Afraid-of-Virginia-Woolf-Blu-ray/dp/B017JVM3BG

if you have enough patience I'm sure it will come as a WAC too, as the other films that were in that Warner poll and were released as WAC.

Great list of movies where actors get to shine. I'd add Long Day's Journey Into Night, which is also a great play on top of letting both Ralph Richardson and Hepburn "do their thing".

Finally got around to watching The Innocents last night.

Loved it. Had no idea what to expect, but immensely enjoyed it. It genuinely creeped me out, though I do do myself a favour by always watching such movies at night in darkness, for added ambiance. The use of vignetting to darken the outer edges during indoor/night scenes worked to perfection.

Popped in Night and the City for this Sunday afternoon and I'm really glad I did. It delivered what I was seeking, and in some ways surprised me. The lead is the antithesis with the noir archetype. He's cowardly, skirts by on blatant lies, and rarely has the upper-hand from his own doing. Widmark embodies him perfectly, always looking far too out of his element with his poor posture in suits that seem a size too large for him. You're just waiting for the repercussions from his own misguided doing to come crashing down on him.

[Show spoiler]And boy does it. That final scene is as cold as anything I've seen in noir.

If only he had accepted the possibility of what could have been with a former lover, instead of being driven by the greed that has come to mark him.

What made me initially want to watch this today, aside from my fondness for all things noir, was Gene Tierney. I was disappointed to see she didn't have that much of a substantial role, seeing how her presence inherently enhances whatever noir she happens to be in, but I'll take what I can get.

Next on the list: Ride the Pink Horse. That is, if I don't end up fulfilling my Tierney desire by viewing Laura.
