Default Apple TV: yay or nay?

Hey guys, I'm sure this off topic has come up somewhere on this forum, but I just want to know more about the Apple TV. I'm thinking of purchasing it to stay alongside my PS3.

My question is, does this thing STORE movies and not just for 24 hrs as rentals? Like, can I go on iTunes and purchase movies and keep them in this little box or is it only to store TV shows, podcasts, music video's and music?

Rentals still have a 24 hr. limit. You can rip your own DVDs and stream them to Apple TV, so storage is not an issue.

I understand that part but what if I were to purchase a movie (the HD version lets say). Once it download onto my PC, can I store it on the Apple TV??

AIUI, apart from the HD downloads, the AppleTV synchs whatever's on the desktop, as with the iPod--

As for getting one to run alongside the PS3, it's essentially identical to the Playstation Network Store, except with a bigger selection.
(And is it just me, or has PSN Movies begun to slow down its New Releases in the last two weeks? )

The real value in the Apple TV is the ability to stream all your media thats in iTunes on your desktop or laptop to the Apple TV. The implication of that is whatever home movies, ripped DVDs, podcasts, etc (in addition to content purchased on the iTMS) that you have are watchable from the comfort of your couch.

This requires some tooling up (ripping software, handbrake) but once you have the tools you can basically rip your entire DVD collection to MP4 and have it on demand with no discernible loss in video quality. If thats interesting to you (and you don't have the big budget for a kalaeidscape system) then Apple TV is for you.

The HD rentals look great! And the HD TV episodes are really nice too!
