Default Different settings for different movies?

I'm an audio guy and a total noob when it comes to video, so I have a question for you as to what I should consider when getting ready to watch a movie or TV on my Panny 42".

Right now I don't change any settings within the control panel of my TV when watching DVD, BD or TV. Should I? I also don't change them for various types of movies, should I?

For instance, by default my TV is set to display STANDARD. It also has options for VIVID, WARM, etc. Should I be changing these settings depending of media I am watching?

If someone knows of a thread that explains all this, please link to it and I'll have a read-though.

With each input that you have video goin thru you should be able to set your settings for that input.

You can set each video input to different picture settings. Otherwise, you should be able to save a few custom settings on the TV.

I got ya and I understand that, but that wasn't my question.

Let's use animated pics like Cars, Ratatouille as an example. Should I be watching those using the STANDARD, VIVID, WARM picture sttings? Or is this purely a personal choice and one I should just experiment with?

I really hope I'm not coming across as too much of a noob in asking this question. LOL!

NOOB! JK

Actually, you should at the very least self-calibrate your set (each input used) using Avia or Video Essentials. To get the best picture, you could have the set professionally calibrated, but that's costly (~$300).

I have never heard of anyone changing their picture settings based on the subject matter being watched. Once you have the picture settings correct, you will not need to change them. You will, however, need to tweak them after a year or two, as the picture will change a little over time.

Hope that helped.

That's exactly the advice I was looking for! Thx Ricshoe!

And yes, my DVE - HD Basics just arrived today in fact from Tower.com. I was concerned about this issue and decided that this would be a good way to set up my Panny, although I love it the way it is.

Many, many thanks!

Excellent! That's all you'll need to set your TV up with the best possible picture short of a professional calibration. Make sure you start out in Standard/Custom mode (I think it changes to Custom as soon as you make an adjustment). The DVD will step you through the rest. Don't be surprised when you are done if the picture seems a little "dull" to you. That usually happens after you've been use to watching your set in Vivid or even Standard mode. Soon, you'll apprreciate the more natural and accurate picture. Good luck.

Thanks again...I'm off this Friday so I'm going to sit down and do a proper calibration! I've made note of your suggestion as well. Thanks.

One more thing, it's best to do the setup in a darkened environment. Ambient light will throw-off some of the settings.
