I would still recommend calling Onkyo. I don't own an Onkyo brand receiver, but I have had mine to loud for comfort and it never overheated or shorted.

that's very odd that it would over heat that instantly. you can check the temp it's running at. hold the display button on the receiver and press the standby button a few times, then let go and press the tone button. my typically runs at just over 100 degrees. it used to get over 110 when i had my cable box on top of it.

Ive got no menu on the 605. Im not using the HDMI out on the receiver, so i cant see a menu on the TV screen. I dont have a HDMI port on my TV. (yeah... i know, i need a new TV too. Ill get one eventually. Just like the sub. ) so i was using a HDMI-DVI adapter, but somehow (dont ask how... cause i really have no idea), i managed to lose the cable.

Its alright though. Now that the fan is on it, it isnt getting hot at all. Wheras before, you couldnt even touch the thing if it had been on for more than a half an hour or so. It actually melted the bottom of my leather wallet which was sitting on top of it. I had to pull it off of the top... Fire hazard right there.
Yeah, as im typing this i cant help but think of how stupid i am to not realize that there is a problem with it.
