Default Roy Orbison: Black & White Night (1987)

This is a concert film of a a very special night. The question I have is I already have the DVD, and the movie is in black and white, hence the title so why is this being released in blu ray?

The sound was superb on the DVD.

For me, I would love to get it mainly for SOUND. It has been released. Amazon for $17.95.

What is with the school of thought that thinks black & white things don't benefit from HD?

The DTS Master Audio soundtrack for this blu-ray is very, very LOUD and absolutely a huge improvement over the standard Dolby Digital track.

Fantastic sound !!

The video, for the first time, is in widescreen format (1.78 aspect ratio).

Does anyone know why it's only 1080i?
I'm probably gonna get it anyways, as Roy is the man and this concert even sounds good when PBS shows reruns.

Ditto for SOUND.

And for once COSTCO CANADA has it for $14.99, but only at a select few locations. Going to pick mine up tomorrow!

It's fetching high prices now. I'll keep it until I see what this new one looks, and sounds like. The original is reference quality.

From the Orbison Facebook page :

" This release has been completely recut from all 7 original camera angles by Alex Orbison himself, who was present the night of the performance. The new version of the show plays in set list running order. The audio has been remixed and remastered to give the viewer the experience as if he or she was there that night. It also features never-before-seen bonus rehearsal and interview footage with the all star band! This is NOT the same Black & White Night you've seen or heard before. "

I would actually welcome a remix on this. The backup singers in the rear channel always irked me. This sounds like a significant upgrade.

However that Amazon link doesn't indicate that it includes the blu-ray

This and the Jeff Beck Rock 'n' Roll Party Honoring Les Paul are my favorite music Blu-rays. What a treat to get a different perspective on the show from a family member! (The sound quality on the original was so good, I suspected post production replacement of instruments. Never could verify this but for a "live" gig, it sounds incredible.)

Just so you know, you can get a region free version from Amazon.de (Amazon Germany) for ~$15 shipped. It's basically the same disc that used to be available here. I bought it a year ago because I was sick of waiting for this to be re-released.

I'm keeping my old copy simply because the team of Elliot Scheiner ( the 5.1 mix) and Bob Ludwig (mastering) gave it SUPERIOR SQ.

I spoke to Roy Orbison, Jr. a couple of days ago, and he confirmed his brother Alex, and Sony's own Richard Dodd have remixed, and remastered this new one. Hopefully, it'll also be great, but I find it hard to believe it'll be any big sonic improvement.

We'll know Feb.24th.

I have the new "30" on the way too. I also took a closer look at the original BR I have. Interesting that the case says it is in 1080i, but my Integra says it is, in fact, 1080p. Also, the DTS HD Master Audio track and the PCM 2.0 track are at 96 kHz, instead of the more common 48kHz.
No wonder the audio is so incredible. Hope the new one is as good.
